Due in Feb 2008

Have any of you been down sick with the flu yet? I can't seem to shake mine. I was really sick with it for about 3 weeks, barely recovered and now I've picked up my co-worker's cold! My OB, Dr Philip Ho was singularly unhelpful when I last saw him and just said if I was really worried, he could recommend a ear-nose-throat specialist! (But I didn't feel THAT sick!)

I've seen my regular GP who gave me some meds and suggested I get a flu shot once I recover from my current bout. I did read that flu vaccines were recommended for all pregnant mothers delivering during flu season (Oct-Mar).

So I was just wondering? Has anyone here got theirs yet - or are plannning on getting the shot? (Most doctors seem to be pro-vaccine while most mothers I speak to say they gave it a miss...)

Hubby was quite sick and I caught his cold a few weeks ago. I've been really healthy and even with the cold I didn't show many symptoms. I think most moms naturally have a higher defense again the common cold/flu because of the increased blood flood. I had a slight cough for a few days and basically slept it off. Just remember to drink lots of fluids and rest. There are some meds that are safe for use during pregnancy but I've been avoiding everything so far. Hope you get lots of rest peasinpod :)

Luckily i haven't got sick yet. But starting from the last two days, I started to have some hives on my thighs, arms/neck etc (except my belly!). It only comes out at night and is very itchy, and can spread quite fast, but disappeared in the morning. The doctor said it is not pregnancy related as it is a bit too early to have PUPP or other pregnancy skin related problems, and most probably it is me that allergic to something. Does anyone has similar experience?

Very annoying though as I can't sleep well at night.

Thanks wasabibunny! Maybe it won't be as bad this time and I'll be able to sleep it off like you in a few days time. Anyway happy to hear that you got better quickly. Is that true about the hormones giving pregnant moms better defense? I've been hearing the opposite - which is that our immune system is weakened when pregnant (what with the body busy doing other stuff as well), making us more susceptible to colds/flus.

Hi Jockette,

I've finally got an appointment with him next Tues, will let u know how it turns out. Thanks for ur feedback :)

Hi all!
New to this forum! We are expecting our baby girl to arrive on January 11th, 2008. Having a C-section due to medical problems. So much worrying when it's your first time...first it's getting through the first trimester, then wondering if there is a heartbeat, then hearing the heartbeat, then waiting for the baby to move, then wondering why the moving has stoppped...but finally, i feel the baby moving around regularly now at 23 weeks and it's great to read all the posts on this forum to know i'm not alone in my crazy worries. I am past the morning sickness part but was wondering if any of you ladies had backaches? My back has been killing me for the last few days and i feel so tired. I thought the second trimester was all about 'feeling the energy?' Anyone else feel tired and should that make me go and exercise to wake myself up or should i listen to my body and spend half my pregnancy in bed? Any tips for backache relief? I work part-time and have been watching my posture but bending over or trying to straighten out my back really hurts!

Welcome Heather!
I'm also 23 weeks and it's good to hear you've settled in and stopped worrying. Check out the following article for a few easy to do at home workouts to strengthen you stomach and back muscles. I think you are experiencing back pain because pregnancy weakens the stomach muscles and your back works extra hard to compensate. Personally I love the cat cradle post (I think it's a cat post in Yoga) because it takes the pressure off my back and it helps stregthen the stomach muscles. I do it almost every night for a few reps and I've had no back problems so far. I'm still traping around in my regular high heels. :haha:

Thanks for your tips Wasabibunny, will start them tonight! Anything to stop looking like an 80 year-old everytime i stand up or bend over!

Hi Lieny
This is my first one as well and due March 15. My morning sickness is now over as I'm nearly 16 weeks. Just try and eat more frequently. Julia

Hi all, thanks for all the advises. I have picked up quite abit of useful info by reading through the messages. My EDD is 12th Feb 2008, so I have reached my 20 weeks. I work full time and I find it extremely hard to concentrate at work nowadays as I am either glued to certain maternity websites, constantly searching for BB's related topics or I am sooo tired that I am fallen asleep on my desk most afternoons. Does anyone have similar experiences?

Julia66: Welcome to the baby club! I'm also due mid-March so I guess we are going through similar experiences. In the past day or two, I've also found my morning sickness (more queasiness than actual vomiting) easing up too - which is nice. And I'm definitely showing more now, so it's harder to fit into my normal clothes. How about you?

Daffer: I haven't been too tired but like you, i find it hard to concentrate at work and all I'm motivated to do is read maternity postings! It's really hard to break the habit and my productivity has totally fallen off.

Hi Daffer which hospital are you going to? I am due on 8 Feb 08 and going to Adventist.

I work for myself so lucky that I don't have to stick to my seat... but like you, I am googling different kind of information constantly.

Have you started buying any baby stuff yet?

donkey and daffer, I agree that I am constently reading up about pregnancy and the first year online and am a total scatterbrain. I can't focus on anything for more than 30min before I am online reading about something I just thought of. I also have days where I just can't seem to stay awake after lunch.

I'm into my 23rd week / 6th month now and feel great. I seem to have more energy back and still no insane cravings. I am, however, more interested in sweets or a snack at tea time. I can't believe this is the last month of my 2nd trimester!!!! Sometimes I get a little scared about going into the last trimester and the whole birthing process. I guess you just have to look ahead and think of holding the little one in your arms and seeing them smile. I hope everyone's feeling better.

I really am enjoying the pregnancy much more NOW than in my first trimester. :yeah2

Hi ya!

Oo er .. 26 weeks - next week, third trimester!!! I can't believe how quickly it has gone (with my first it seemed to drag on).

I am afraid to say I am definitely going out of my 'honey moon' phase (had a good innings - from week 12 to now :flower:). I feel pretty uncomfortable now - especially toward the evening! I also have quite bad pelvic pain, which prevents me from doing much exercise! - For an exercise addict, this quite a big deal for me

I went to the gym this morning for the first time in two months. It was hilarious - after 6km on the bike I felt like I was going to just die! - Ha ha, ended up eating a bag of sweets just for the sugar (pointless)!

Still I feel good for it now, and will definitely try again - just have to pick days when the pelvic pain eases up (hmph)!

lolipop... you are the first of our bunch... you might even end up with a new years baby!!! How do it feel? I hope you feel better... did you do any prenatal yoga?

All this fitness talk is making me feel so lazy! I am 18 weeks and am feeling a lot more energetic now. I have been walking a lot and swimming a little but even so I haven't been to the gym for weeks! I would like to start prenatal yoga at Pure when I arrive in HK in October. Has anyone been?

As a first-timer, I'm thinking about antenatal classes too. Can anyone recommend any?

Hi Lolipop

Sounds like yoga will be better for you. Also try to swim more. I am at 21 weeks now and am lucky that I am still able to run. Have thought of joining Pure for yoga but have been delaying it....May have to do it in 3rd trimester.

I went to the gym to do some strength training last Sunday and I think all the guys on the weight floor were staring at me when I was lifting or doing squad!

Yeah Donkey, I have always wanted to try Yoga, its always been one of those things I never get round to doing! I think the gym episode was just me having a bad day. I had to have an emergency dr appointment today because of (TMI) nasty discharge over night with some abdominal pain, they have done some swabs - most likely an infection. So I think that is why I was so shaky. ... I am actually glad because I was horrified that just a couple of months off training could make me so unfit! - actually just on a side line to that, as they normally do, they weighed me, and I hadn't put anything on at all in 2 weeks! This happened with my first - put all my weight on in first 2 trimesters then it just stopped piling on - just a very little bit more over the last three months! - will be interesting to see if that happens again!

Wasabubunny - nope no yoga, but probably should have! This is my second, and I have to say it has generally been a lot easier then my first pregnancy - and gone so much more quickly! I know I have said it before, but I just cant believe I am approaching my third trimester next week! I feel pretty good today, but over the last couple of weeks it has been up and down - especially with the hormones! They can turn me into a bit of a monster! Although I have been doing a fair amount of walking and also playing very hard with my very hyper 3yr old, I think not going to the gym has not helped the hormone situation - so it is really nice that I feel I can start all that again (had too much pelvic pain up until now).

Yeah, cant believe this little boy lands in January - Actually, funny fact: All of the females in my family are born in July and August and all of the males in January - isn't that spoooooooookkkyyyy!!! LoL

Have you guys got names for your little ones yet?

lolipop,

Hope you are feeling better! Get some rest and don't worry about anything else. Did you check up my link in a earlier post about basic at home workouts? You could try those - I fine them helpful with back and posture. I weighed myself today and I also haven't gain much in the last week and a bit. I think it's because my stomach is pushed up so much there's no room and I haven't has much of an appepite. I've been forcing myself to have regular meals because I don't feel very hungry most of the time.

We've picked a name but not 100% sure yet. How about you?
