Who is your medical insurer and why?

I agree with Cara- we use the public system (including birth and all subsequent check ups) and have never had a problem and often feel I have received more time and attention from the public system and I know in an emergency I wold definitely be heading to the nearest public hospital.
I only go private (and pay) when DD needs vaccines not given in public system but DD needs in case we move home.

I would normally agree with cara and Nic but with a pre-existing condition it is actually better for me to have insurance. And, after the year I have had with home insurance (three claims worth $18K plus the car bender fender which would have been a further $30K), I think it is worth it.

will you never let me forget our kids almost burning down your house??? LOL!

Thank god we were there at the time! Good luck with the insurace!

Are you kidding C! It is just far too much fun :) And the joy of thinking about what they will get up to next time they see each other! Gotta get me insurance for that.

But that was just the third incident in as many months. It was getting pretty silly for a while but stopped after the bed incident.

for those wondering what we are on about... oze's daughter and my son set fire to their bed last year.... like i said, thank god we were in the house when it started to fill with smoke, otherwise the whole place would have gone up in flames.

I am using AXA PPP, very good and very efficient, deposit the money into my account within 3 weeks. I dont go through the agent and I just do everything through internet. I strongly recommend .

thanks again for all the feedback. It is helpful given that I just found out that we could join the company health plan which is DOUBLE the cost than what I have been looking at and doesn't include optical or dental !!

carang, sorry (thanks for filling in the gaps), I spend so much time here I sometimes forget to put in the background!

I've had myself and two children insured with IHI for 4 years (they cover two children for free per each adult member), and have found them to be excellent. They were the only company willing to insure me including my pre-existing condition (for an additional % penalty on the premium, I am covered for my condition).

The only hassle is that their card is pretty much not accepted over the counter anywhere I go here in HK as an outpatient, so I find I do have to keep a spreadsheet running to track our outstanding claims, usually takes about 3 weeks for auto-reimburse to our account. Occasionally I have had to "remind" them re certain claims that have become stuck in the system, but the response via e-mail is within hours and always positive.

For large hospital stays which are planned, pre-authorisation can arranged within 24 hours via a special e-mail "hotline" for that purpose only. Works beautifully.

We have found the investment in our medical care and peace of mind to be well worth the cost (especially over a particularly trying pregnancy). I'm sorry, but personally, wrestling with the public system for myself and my children is something that I am overjoyed I can afford not to do (and the same goes for my home country).

Hi

What an interesting thread. We were with Allianz and they were terrible. Disputing every claim. Had to laugh (dryly) when we saw that they made a record profit the year we took out the insurance, had to think that that was because they disputed every claim!

Now with HSBC through my work and they are good so far. We have a broker through my work which helps.

we are with Allianz (through my husbands company - we don't pay for it) and they have been GREAT. never dispute a thing. strange.

Our agent recommended InterGlobal from the UK and have never had any problems with claims. However, we do have to send our claims directly to the UK, but gather you have to do this with other insurers.
My son (3yrs) is also insured free under my coverage and has the same benefits as I do.
The price isn't huge compared to our old BUPA which we just couldn't afford any more.

Hope this helps.

aussie_mum - hopefully our experiences with Allianz were a one-off and not indicative of their entire company attitude. Have to say though that being told by their chief medical expert that we essentially know nothing because we are reading the policy as "laypeople" (read as, dumb) did rub us up the wrong way (I am a lawyer) especially when they then had to agree in the end that we were right and had emails from personnel at their company to confirm our interpretation of the policy. They made the only 2 claims we made with them, which were both maternity related and very stressful, extraordinarily difficult.
