What is safe to drink during pregnancy?

I hate the taste of water, and before I got pregnant, I would drink anything but. Chinese tea, juice, Ribena, soft drinks and basically anything that doesn't taste of water. But supposedly, these are all unsafe to drink now. Chinese tea contains caffeine; juice is too cold, blah. What can I drink now? I tried bottled water for a couple of days but I found myself drinking less than the equivalent of two cups. Any suggestions? Thanks!

drink what you want in moderation... except alcohol.

if you like take some lemon and squeeze it into your water.

i drank nestea and coke light throughout both of my pregnancies.

For me it was everything except alcohol and caffeine. If I wanted a soda I drank cream soda or sprite/ 7up which has no caffeine, pre packaged teas I had in moderation as I doubt there is a lot of tea" in it but did stay away from actual tea (except chrysanthemum tea).

I hated the taste of plain water when I was pregnant. I found squeezing some lemon or lime made it drinkable. I also found 7-up and sprite helped my morning sickness a lot. I agree with carang - as long as you do it in moderation you don't have to really cut anything out.

I'm not a fan of plain bottled water either. :)

I'm doing a lot of herbal teas (no caffeine), bottled water with just a splash of juice/squeeze of lemon, and surprisingly, lots of milk and soy milk (one of the few ways I am getting protein now, since most meat makes me nauseous).

I was so damn thirsty when I was pregnant that I downed water without caring about the blandness! Lemon is a good idea, but orange wedges or cucumber slices added to plain water are yummy too. Just go easy on the sugary stuff.

I drank Chai lattes in the morning as I couldn't stand the taste of coffee. A little caffeine won't harm anything. As someone else said, anything in moderation except alcohol, though I did have one glass of wine a week in the later months.

I am still drinking coffee everyday, I heard that no more than 2 cups of coffee is no harm. But green tea is not good for the baby growth - I read that somewhere but cannot remember why.

If you want to add taste to water here is a great method - add a bit of orange juice to the water then the water taste a bit sweet, or eat some candy while you drink water. (I do that some times as I always forget to drink water ;))

I have the same problem but i find ginger beer helps and drinking some soft drinks it's okay and the ginger fla does help with the morning sickness.

I have one more thing to ask - recently I really feel like milk tea & bubble milk tea. But I know tea is not very good to drink during pregnancy but I still had one tonight in a restaurant coz I really miss it. Want to hear some ideas about drinking milk tea.

drink what you like... just do it in moderation. one cup of milk tea isn't going to cause any problems.... 25 cups in one day might.

Water is a tough issue here in Hong Kong. The Dongjiang river (where HK buys its water from China) has all kinds of illegal toxic chemical dumping (as well as raw sewage and landfills) and unfortunately, wastewater treatment plants remove bacteria and are not so good on removing chemicals. These build up in our system from constant low-dose exposure, but the main problem is they effect embryos much more harshly than adults, causing hormonal issues and reproductive cancers later in life. That being said, bottled water contains PBA and other endocrine disrupting chemicals, which cause the same issues. Just depends what you feel has less exposure.

All I am drinking is water and milk, as I'm on a low sugar diet due to insulin resistance. If you have no problems with it, then 100% juice once a day would be a good serving of your 5 fruit and vege. I've read that 1-2 cups of coffee is fine but nobody should really be drinking any alcohol. Despite the UK study saying alcohol is okay, there are many more studies confirming that it should be avoided during alcohol.

I think that stress is very bad for you during pregnancy, and I see alot of HK moms so worried about every tiny details that I wonder if all that nervous energy is actually worse them them than the odd drink or coffee.
Everything in moderation. I had my own morning coffee every day -- sometimes I'd mix decaf and regular beans to make it lighter.
Occasionally, like once a week, I'd indulge in a small glass of wine.
On Valentine's Day, my husband took me out and I treated myself to a rare bit of sushi.
My child is perfectly fine. European moms I know all drink modest amounts of coffee / wine, and their kids are fine. Japanese ladies eat sushi, and their children are among the most healthy in the world.
I'm not saying you should have a bottle of vodka or a platter of raw meat, of course.
I hate to say it, but HKers are a bit paranoid. When my baby was a few months, and I was still breastfeed, I pour a tiny half-glass of beer during a group dinner, and a HK friend SCREAMED at me and took away my glass. It was incredibly rude and stressful.
Anyway, I managed to BF 8 months with no problem, even with the odd coffee or drink.
Even my HK parents -- the baby's grandparents -- are more relaxed.
So long as you're not out of control, just enjoy your pregnancy.
