I'm just wondering what's a good laundry powder to wash baby clothes? Should fabric conditioner be used?
And do you all wash new clothes?

Thanks!

yeah of course... i wash every new clothes. Are you preparing for your new born? I use a liquid laundry detergent for my baby. The brand is VENDOME. Its contain no detergent and safe for baby. its all in one. Soap and softener...smells good and very nice.

i've always washed my son's clothes with the rest of the family. it would take an awful lot of baby clothes to make one load of laundry...
he's never had a problem or reaction to it...

We washed D's clothes separately for the first 6 months. All new clothes and soft toys were washed before his arrival. We used Vigor baby detergent from ParknShop/Wellcome.

Persil nonbio is also good. It is not recommended to use fabric softner with newborns because more likely to cause a skin reaction. With our firstborn I think we washed her clothes separately for quite a few months, but with our secondborn just a few weeks, just to check she wasn't getting any skin irritations and while she was very delicate. If you do wash with rest of family and your baby does get irritated skin where in contact with clothing, eliminate fabric softners and use bare minimum of nonbio detergent.

Amway also does a baby laundry detergent - very economical.
I washed everything before wear in the regular family detergent for the first few weeks. Then, I just took new clothes out of the packet and put them on baby. Unless, bought from a market/sample shop. Now everything always gets washed together - never had any problems.

salt

This is slightly different but I found good old fashioned salt really helped with babies soiled clothes.
Especially with re-gurgitated milk (which I had a lot of in the beginning!)
Napisan and other detergents werent breaking down the stains or that off milk smell!
Just dissolve a small handfull in a bucket of warm water (you can buy the cheap no frills salt) and soak the babies clothes before washing

PS I would also wash all new clothes before your baby wears them.
I used to work in the garment industry and even in the best factories the fabric is handled by many sweaty workers before you get your clothes at the shop!

Is it ok to handwash new baby clothes or is there some reason you should put them through the machine (eg reaching a certain temperature)?

My machine is crap and would probably turn cute baby clothes into grey cardboard.

pinemarten I think the main reason is to get the chemicals off the clothes which are on all new fabrics. They can sometimes cause a reaction for the baby.

Also there's the hygiene thing mentioned by cinnamon.

So for those reasons I guess it's preferable to have at least a good warm thorough wash rather than handwashing them, but I wouldn't fret too much if you can't use the machine.

Test a couple of less valuable baby clothes in the machine first perhaps?
