Twin Birth & Delivery

Dear all,

I am 4 months pregnant with Twins and due in December. The doctor has suggested C-section and recommended Queen's Mary Hospital.

I would love to hear from all the Twins Mums with their experience on Twin's births & deliveries in HK. And any suggestion on any other hospital?

This is my first pregnancy and I am bit nervous. Please suggest.

Thanks.

Teeks,

QM does have the best neonatal intensive care in HK. So if your Dr suspects there may be some complications then you should definitely deliver there.

But if all looks fine and money isn't an issue then you can also consider a private hospital. Btw, has your Dr delivered twins before?

Here's some more info on QM:

Dear Rani,

Thank you very much for your reply. My Dr. works for Matilda Hospital, but due to expensive charges there, he suggested me to Queen Mary Hospital. I am sure he has delivered Twins before that's why he advised me of C-section.

I am reading on the other forum that you've forwarded to get some idea. Thanks!

Can a woman expecting multiples deliver vaginally?
While the chance of a cesarean delivery is higher in twin than in singleton births, about half of women expecting twins can have a normal vaginal delivery. Chances are good if both babies are in a normal, head-down position.

Anyone know what the practice is at QM?

Teeks,
Congratulations on your pregnancy! I just found out I am pregnant with twins too! I am only 7 weeks along, but have seen the ehartbeats and am hoping all will continuew well.
I have visitied the Matilda Hospital, (I got really sick last week and became dehydrated) they treated me so well there I decided then and there that's where I wanted to have these babies. The only thing is I have heard that Queen Mary has the NICU in Hong KOng, so in case there are any problems, the abbies would need ot be transferred, so I thinki I am goign to wait onit and see what my doc thinks further down the line. Thsi is my first pregnancy.

This is totally jumping the gun, but have you thought about the sleeping situation? Are you going to do two nurseries or hav ethem share a room/crib? I have no idea what to do, I am freaking out a bit honestly.

I have been trying to eat well and really take it easy but I feel like time is already starting to creep up-- there is so much planning ot do with twins.

I would love for us to keep up and keep posted on how the pregnancies progress. Best of luck and Congrats!

Hope

DoubleTrouble,
Put them in the same crib to start with. They don't move around much and they are comforted by the proximity of their sibling with whom they shared a much smaller space for almost 9 months. This is particularly important if they are premature. It helps them grow faster if they are in the same crib, and even in the same incubator. QMH doesn't allow this practice in the NICU unfortunately.

Yes, QMH will do vaginal birth for twins although it is very rare for a woman to want to do this here. I did it under duress (wanted to get out of the hospital asap due to sars) and I wouldn't make the same decision again. I strongly suggest you do a c-section if you go to QMH. It's very uncomforatable to be in labor there as they believe in not letting you get up and pinning you down in the most uncomfortable positions in order to monitor the fetal heartbeats. By all means, go for vaginal birth at Matilda! If you do try for vaginal birth at QMH, they'll prep a c-section room for you just in case. Heck they, do that everywhere with twins.

Just diagnosed with a low lying placenta, I am 13 weeks prego with twins, experienced painless red bleeding twice, and dr. says to just relax activity and hope it moves up? Anyone have advice or encouraging words? I could use some right now, thanks.

Hi DoubleTrouble,

I don't know about the low-lying placenta. But on my 23rd week, the doctor at the private clinic found that I have shortened cervix which would've lead me to premature delivery of my twins. So I was told to show this report to Tsan Yuk Hospital & they sent me straight to Queen Mary Hospital the same day.

The next day,I had a minor operation to tie the cervix tunnel to hold the babies until further months. After the operation, the doctor suggested me to take everything easy and try to relax lying down whenever possible. So I quit my job recently too.

Now I am on my 31st week, and the babies are hanging on there, growing up and bouncing a lot. I am just hoping that they stay bit longer until the due date (December 2nd week). Both babies are head down now, so I may try normal delivery.

Good luck to both of us!

Hi, I don't have twins but have a friend who does. She delivered at QMH even though she could afford private, because of the NICU there being the best in Hong Kong, and since her twins were born 6 weeks early that was definitely the right decision to make.

Regarding the delivery, from what I've heard QMH are very reluctant to schedule C-sections in advance, even when it looks very likely that you will end up having one.

If you want greater comfort than afforded in the public wards, you can look into delivering private at QMH, but I think this may cost almost as much as the Matilda, because they charge *everything* as a private patient, not just the private room.

Hi Teeks,

I'm also pregnant with twins, 29 weeks, due 5th Jan.
Have you decided to go to QM for delivery or Matilda?
I was recommended by my private dr to do a C-section - she said that there is a risk to the 2nd baby if I try vaginal delivery - did your drs tell you the same thing?

Hi Corina,

I have decided to go to QM for delivery. I was there in Sept. for minor operation, and found that their service is very good.

Up until my 28th week, my Dr suggested for the C-section (told me the same thing). But on my 30th week's scan, he saw both the babies are head down so he suggested vaginal delivery if possible.

Since I am seeing both my private Dr. and Dr. at Tsan Yuk, they both suggested Vaginal delivery is best for me to do. But it all depends at the later stage of delivery. So hoping wotever I need to do, they'll let me know what will be the best way to do.

Corina - Hi!

No I haven't so far. I am using the UK Twinsclub, you can get lots of suggestions and advice from there. If you have time, try look into www.twinsclub.co.uk

But recently, I got a reply from one of the MOM member asking me to join their club in HK and gave me her email address too. But I have'nt come around to do anything there yet.

Have you joined the MOM club? Let me know.

Hi Corina, Have you joined the MOM club? How is it (if you have).
I have posted a reply for you and it's gone to 2nd page. Please check.

Hi Teeks, I've posted a chq to MOM recently, but no reply from them yet :-)
Will let you know if I get anything from them.

I'll go check on that twinsclub website now.

Hi Corina, Have you decided to go to Matilda for the delivery?
I am attending the antenatal classes in the Tsan Yuk every Wednesday. And probably start the exercises from next Wed (just to be ready if I need to do natural birth).
Let me know what you are up to. All the best!

Hi Corina, what a bummer!
Today, on my 33rd week's check up @Tsan Yuk, I got my doctor to certify that I can take the antenatal exercise class. But the physiotherapy Dept. rejected saying, due to having twins they would not enrol me after the 32nd week.
So any twin mum should know this if they want to take antenatal exercise class, they should not exceed their 32nd week (I think this is only effective in Tsan Yuk Hospital).
