soy milk formula or hypoallergenic formula

My 10month old has an allergy to cow's milk and dairy products. I plan to stop breastfeeding when he reaches 1 year old, and need some advice regarding formula.

I am a little confused about whether he should he switch to soy or hypoallergenic formula?

I got a book from the library and the nutritionist rated soy milk formula last (after breastmilk, cow's milk, goat's milk). I know you shouldn't give it to babies under 6 months due to the high level of phto-oestrogen, but is there still a risk for older babies?

Is hypoallergenic formula still made from cow's milk and is it the same as hydrolysate formula?

What about goat's milk?

Any advice or recommendations on which brand to use would be much appreciated.

Our baby is also alergic to cows milk protein. Our doctor recommended using the hypoallergenic/hydrosolyte formula rather than soy based. We were told that soy is a very common allergy, so best to avoid if your baby is prone to allergies.

Also, recent studies have suggested that the phytoestrogens in soy formula may be linked to adult cancer and cause a younger onset of puberty. We were told that soy should really only be used when a child has a rare metabolic disorder called galactasemia, lactase deficency and some vegetarian diets.

The HA formula is cow's milk based. I'm not really sure of the process, but I believe that the proteins have been broken down into simple components that the baby is able to process.

I really don't know anything about goat's milk. It was never discussed as an option with our Doctor.

You should probably talk with your doctor or allergy specialist about which formula they think is most appropriate for your child.

Commonly, if a child is allergic to cows milk he/she is allergic to soy milk as well. This is also the case with my son. Why not get your doctor to test for allergy to soy? My son drinks milk alternatives (rice milk & hazelnut milk) but the carton says they are not suitable for kids under 2 years (unless medically directed) because of the low fat content.

Thanks so much for the advice. I think we'll avoid soy formula and check with doctor about hypoallergenic formula. Hopefully he may have some sample sizes as it would be such a waste to buy a big tin and baby hates the taste.
