Patent Ductus Arteriosos - Pediatric Cardiology advice please

Hi
Our 23 month old daughter has recently been diagnosed with a heart murmur and tests revealed she has PDA which is moderate sized and will require some intervention. Prior to this diagnosis, she has been a happy and very healthy little girl. The murmur was found on a routine examination for a cold/cough.

The pediatrician that performed the echocardiogram said he would do the procedure (likely to put a coil in heart) and that I wouldnt need another specialist? This doesnt sound right to me. Further investigations back home (Australia) and overseas (London) reveal that pediatric cardiologists do this procedure. Ideally I would like to go home and have it done, but its tricky due to the fact we are not residents and dont pay a medicare tax as well as long wait lists.

Has anyone had experience here with this condition or Dr Maurice Leung (who was receommended from someone else). I hear Dr Leung is a pediatric cardiologist.

Thanks, very stressed out.

Hi,

My daughter needs a check up this year, including an echocardiogram. Would anyone be able to recommend a good paediatric cardiologist?

All past work and check-ups have been carried out in the UK but this is getting a bit difficult now.

Thanks

Shoni

I posted this query on my Mothersgroup as I know a mum in the know.
Here is her response, "We only seen the Dr's at QMH. Depending on the urgency and wether they want to go private or public I would suggest they see Dr Barbara Lam in the Central Building. She is a Pediatric Specialist and has done really well by us. She was head of QMH NICU for 27 years and now goes to the private hospitals throughout Hong Kong when her patience are in hospital. My understanding is all pediatric Heart Surgeries are done at QMH private or public!"

So, get your child to a local doctor and ask him for a referral to QMH. You can also see public doctors privately now e.g. Prince of Wales has a private section which allows you to skip the waiting time to see a pediatric cardiologist. The fees are reasonable. Depending on your insurance cover, you might still need a reference form a GP to do this.

The team at Queen Mary hospital are supposed to be excellent.

The Dr's name is Professor Y.F. Cheung Tel; 2255 3847. You may need a referral letter to make an appt.

Thank you everyone.

I don't really want to go through the process of getting her registered with the public system, our Dr has referred us once and we did not have a very good experience with the cardiologist here in HK.

We just really need a quick ECG to make sure all is well. If there are any issues we can hopefully get them resolved in the UK when we are back in the summer.

Shoni

Dr Maurice Leung is I think one of the few pediatric cardiologists in hk, he is also a professor at HKU, shoe might be a good specialist for you to go to for heart related concerns, if you wanna go private
