Hi Wee Kean,

Thank you for the Merdeka festival invitation. It sounds really fun and exciting; how often can we celebrate our independence day outside Malaysia with a bunch of Malaysians!

The thing that really attract me most is - DURIAN!! yum yum yum.. so, please include Eleanor and myself.

P/S - I think I still know how to sing Negaraku.

Cheers,
Phui Har

Hi Wee Kean,

Thanks for the invite to your place. I would love to come. Yes, I am in HK and my cellphone has voicemail but I am not sure why I didn't get your call. Will email you.

Kara, happy first birthday to your baby boy.

Let me know about the lunch. It would be great to meet everyone.

Merdeka celebration: Count me in!

Dear Wee Kean,

Yes, I'm interested, count me and Ariel in for the Merdeka celebration.

and Yes, I'll be going to Gymboree tomorrow afternoon. Pan Mee offer still available?

cheers,
mainfong

Helper Recommendation

On a side note, I wanted to see if anyone has an Indonesian helper. I am looking for one (so I can converse in Malay) whom can also speak some English (as hubby doesn't speak Malay). This is my first time looking, so any recommendations on how to start? I am due in November and need a helper soon. Feel free to send me a PM if you can share additional information.

Helper recommendation

Hi SG Gal,

I used an employment agency for my indonesian helper and so far the service provided by the agency and the helper they recommended are good. These helpers go through intensive training before coming to HK and mostly know how to speak English and Cantonese (learned at training camp). However, I speak to my helper in Malay most of the time.

If you are interested, below is the relevant information:-
Agency - Megasea Employment Agency Limited
Person I liaise with - Janet Lo (Customer Service Officer).
Direct Line - 21939568
Office - In Mongkok and Causeway Bay
Agency fee paid - HKD1,400 (including their insurance, medical check-up, air ticket, etc.)

Hi girls!
Wee Kean, your National Day party sounds really fun! I will be back by then so definitely count me in.
You are most welcome to bring your baby to Bel-Air's playroom, it is usually deserted in the daytime so lots of room for them to roam around. Then maybe we can have a coffee at my place! Email me at [email protected]. This invite extends to all in this group, ok!!

Hi Kara23, WeeKean, et. al.

Not Malay myself, but hubby spent 10+ years in Malaysia before moving to Canada... and we both love Malay food (esp. beef rendang and ko loh mee!). Have a 17-month old that gets exposed to Malay only when visiting friends/family in Kuching/KL... Is it okay to join up with you guys once in a while? Can't do it all the time as you guys live on the opposite end of the island from us!

Har-loi, thanks so much for the info. It's so helpful esp the agency contact info. I'm glad to know where to start now.

Merdeka Mini Celebration

Dear fellow Malaysian,

Re Merdeka Celebration, is it ok if we start early, say at about 11.30am? This is because we can go to Gymboree free play session at 2pm, after all the chit chat, National song singing, play and makan makan...

Please let me know if this is still ok for you.

HL, the chili paste that you gave me was sooooooo spicy!!!!! It was fantastic!!!!!!!! Thanks very much!

Har,
I am in the processing of getting an Indonesian helper to come over to work for me. I called up the number you listed and guess what? they want to charge me $13,000 !!!!!! that is the most expensive agency charge I know from calling several agencies. Mind if I ask how you manage to get 1400?

incidentally, was reading this thread with interest as hubby and i are both malaysian and we both miss malaysian food heaps. good authentic malaysian food, that is. our daughter now 11months was born 30/8/05. too bad can't "hold her in" to give birth 1 day later coinciding with merdeka day. haha.

kara23, you mention you live in Belcher's. Do you by any chance work in HKU (I used to and travelled pass Belchers every day; also know many belchers residents who work in HKU)?

jane, are you still reading this thread? i am also from sabah, kota kinabalu specifically. have been to sandakan once in my girlhood but that is a long time ago. left sabah 1988 to migrate to australia.

incidentally, to my m'sian friends in this thread, anyone who knows of a helper (indo/phil) whom they could recommend to me? eg ex-helper of a friend etc. i don't really want to look through agencies or websites. like all mums, i haven't found anyone whom i trust to care for my 11-month-old so i quit a good job to become stay home mum. i just find out my part-timer has been stealing from me - she took coins from our coin pouch and granted, it is not a lot of money and i was prepared to give her second chance 'cos she is so good at what she does. but the trust is gone. was prepared to take her full-time too! would appreciate if someone can help....

I'm so happy to see this thread by accidentally found. I'm Malaysia Chinese, hometown in KK, have been staying in KL for past 10 years. Recently residing in Shen Zhen, China as my hubby is working here. In fact, we're new here just about 1 month, it's unthinkable that i can find a lot of space friends from Malaysia and even from my hometown, KK.

I have a 28months old boy with us here but to be a stay-at-home mother isn't as easy as i yearned, so i do hope i can find a playgroup for my boy and even for myself that really can cheer me up. Although my place quite far away from you all, i think i'm still able to meet your sometimes when i'm going down to HK.

Actually i'm quite keen to join the Merdeka celebration, i do wish my son can remember where are we from and what is our origin custom! Can i join? But be frankly i'm not good in Malay speaking, so does my hubby.

Lastly to say, i'm thankful that i can find this forum and meet you all.

My email : [email protected]

Dear all, we are at Dali, Yunnan Province at the moment. Lovely ancient city and delicious wild mushrooms! Guess what, we found at least 2 Malaysian restaurants in Kunming and diffierent type of so called "Malaysian food" in the menu of various restaurants.....Didn't dare to try though, hahaha!

Re Merdeka Celebration, I would love to welcome more fellow Malaysian to join. Unfortunately, my apartment is tiny.... Let me think of a solution and will reply to you once I am back to HK.

Hi, We are back! Had a great time and had seen lots of amazing things but also glad to be at home.

To those who have expressed an interest in joining the Merdeka celebration, please check your email.

MALAYSIA BOLEH!

Hi Mummybee, kara23 lives in Bel-air. I live in Belcher's. I do know someone who is working in HKU music department. I go to HKU very often. Sometimes in the morning with my daughter, we will go to the Lily pond or Starbucks or bookshop or museum or foodcourt. Sometimes in the evening with my hubby for an after dinner walk and to watch the Disney fireworks. I like HKU very much!

I have just checked the previous messages and please corret me if I am wrong that PeiShih, MainFong, PhuiHar, SFGal, Quinsiya-Asley and Yucreations are interested in joining the Merdeka Celebration.

hi mummybee
yes, i live in Bel-Air, but I don't work in HKU. Which phase and tower are you? Will I see you at the Merdeka celebration?
Let's catch up then

kara

Wow this is good forum to find friends. Saya orang Indonesia,Jakarta. Baru saja gabung di forum ini, my hubby orang America dan kita punya anak laki-laki 3 bulan. Am dying to have Asian friends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please invite me when ever you guys have events. we live at stanley.., is anyone live near by??

Kara, i should have made myself clearer. I don't live in Belchers or Bel-air. It is just that I used to work in HKU Faculty of Medicine the blue building farther out overlooking the bay not the main campus with lili pond. My colleague used to live in Belchers and The Westwood downstairs of Belchers was our regular lunchtime haunt! Sadly I will not be able to join you all for merdeka lunch. hubby and baby and myself are visiting my parents in Australia on 25/8 in time for bub's 1st birthday. BTW, I live on Hollywood Road, SoHo. Any Malaysians particularly sabahans nearby ???
