Having an elective c-section

I am having an elective c-section at 38 weeks. Is that early? for those of you who have had an elective c-section how many week where you when you had your c-section?

Mine was at week 38 as well. It's safe, I think cos it's considered full term n u dont run the risk of getting into any drama if your baby decides to come out slightly early. My baby was healthy n of a good size. Hope to help!

I was 39 weeks. The more they stay in the better, until you reach 40 weeks( if there are no other medical conditions of course)

The lungs need time to fully develop, the earlier the baby comes out the higher the risk of breathing problems is. That is why it is reccommended to wait until 39 wks in most places.

absolutely - the longer, the better. i had it the first day of my 39th week. in the US, its' recommended at 39 weeks, but I know many in Asia have it at 38 weeks.

I had one at 37 week due to some complication, another one at 38 weeks. Both babies are a bit small but no big issue.

Thanks for the replies.. with my first she was overdue... and i ended up with an emergency which is why I am having a c section this time.. was just a little concerned at 38 weeks which is two weeks earlier than my first. Seems it should be ok. Thanks.

I agree, the longer the better. I think 38 weeks for a singleton is quite early. Unless there would be medical issues of course. My first one was born 9 days late (came by herself; I was scheduled for induction 13 days late) but was very big (so they advised me to have an induction at 39 weeks the second time, but I miscarried). I was induced with the twins, but even with multiples they would not schedule me before 38 weeks (I had them at 38w2d) because due dates can always be a little off, so 37 is usually not recommended. Before 38 weeks my hospital required an amnio to check for lung maturity (US in my case). I don't think you'll run into major issues at 38 weeks, but it's still 2 weeks early.

My son was delivered by elective C section at 38 weeks (in Tokyo) - no problems whatsoever.

36 weeks Carang? Geez that's early! Was there a problem with bub? I had a c-section with my first at 40w2d. I had an induction but after 2 days I still failed to dilate. I'm hoping to have an elective this time round but I would only be happy if it was at 39 or 40 weeks. How does that work in the public system?

take your pick, i had:

1) EXTREMELY high blood pressure
2) thyroid problems
3) was in a wheelchair/couldn't walk at all due to excruciating hip pain

just to name a few that i can think of off the top of my head.

public hospitals are usually very conservative. in my case, my problems were such that they deemed the risk to the baby was minor compared to the risk to me if i carried her any longer....

Wowzers!

My first appointment with the antenatal clinic is a month away still but I will be asking about an elective for this baby.
