hi...can anyone advise what is the cost of getting a full-time maid here in HK? Would appreciate a breakdown on the costs ie agency fees, monthly levy, maid salary, etc. Would be very grateful. Also if anyone can recommend a reliable and honest maid agency for me to refer to. :thanks

maid salary 3480 per mth (current min. as defined by hk govrnt)
government levy 400 per mth (paid half yearly to gov.)

our agent charged around 2000 one time fee (if i remember correctly). will PM you details of my recommendation.

this is all i'm remembering for now, not sure if i've missed anything.

thanks a lot kelly...so dat means our monthly cost of a maid will be around HKD3880. Any insurance dat we need to pay?

Hi,

Besides those basic costs of Agency Fees, Salary, Government Levy and Insurance, it costs us another more-less $2400 for her food plus her other personal needs (toileteries/snacks) since she eats what we eat -- eventhough as per her contract food allowance will only cost you $300 (what can you buy for $10 a day or $3.34 per meal in HK?) ....oh well, just imagine having another adult in your household, eh!

It seems a lot, though after all she has been really good with our kids and all of us :Butbut-- at the end of the day it's entirely up to you, whatever feels right.

Hope that will help.

The insurance cost for our helper is HK$550 per year (covering the basics including hospitalization and partial recovery of outpatient costs). Insurance costs vary depending on what you need; some pckgs are more expensive but will also cover dental etc.

Salary, $3480 a month (minimum)
Levy, $400 a month
Insurance, $550 a month
Transport costs (depends where you live and how much travelling around HK you will expect helper to do)
Food (up to you. She can eat your food or you can give her money for her food)

Really? You pay $550 a month for insurance? What does it cover?? I paid $550 A YEAR for DH insurance! (Actually it was a 2-yr pckg for $1100, so it basically covers the DH contract period.)

insurance should cover the bulk (if not all) of the cost. but you have to be sure to follow restrictions as listed in the terms (in panel, out of panel doctor etc.) we've never had too much trouble claiming for doc visits etc.

who do we go for insurance? Oh u mean we pay the insurance and she will get like a card or something for her to see a panel of doc as and when she's sick? Does the agency help to arrange this for us?

agencies will usually offer insurance

and $550/month is VERY expensive. we took the expensive deal for our helper, so that it included dental as well... i think it was $750 for a year!

Did any of u send your helper for a medical checkup? The reason I'm asking is that since we have a very young toddler and a baby on the way, I would feel better if she gets an all clear for her health.
Could someone recommend me a clinic which you have sent your helper to and how much is the checkup package?
Thank you very much for your input.

I just finished arranging our helper to do a check-up here.
World Expert: Hotline 2890-3808
Their pre-employment pckg for DH (WE5A) includes all the routine stuff: HIV, Hep B, Pregnancy test, Xray etc.
Cost is HK$555

(Ideally you should send the DH to this checkup before signing the contract with her. We didn't think about doing this till after we hired her but at least even then, it'll - hopefully - give you some peace of mind.)

Whilst totaling up your costs, don't you have to provide a flight home every year? (Not expensive, but neither is the insurance.)

Ticket home every 2 years. A lot of Expats who go home during the summer and xmas send their helpers home too. Its entirely up to you.
