April 2011 Moms

hey ladies,

how is everyone? everyone has been really silent lately. i just got back from a weeklong holiday in Taiwan and it was really nice and relaxing and wonderful to spend alone time with hubby. unfortunately, i also brought back a stuffy nose and bouts of sneezing with me - i sure hope i'm not coming down with something. i know some of you ladies have already suffered with colds and such, so if you have any advice or home remedies for me to try as a preemptive measure, please let me know!

banane76, where are you going on vacation and when do you get back?

We are off to visit the in-laws in the UK. We get back early Jan. Hope you don't have a cold Maria. Just load up on Vitamin C. If you can get your hands on Grapefruit seed extract, that really helped speed up my heeling. Drink lots of fluids and get as much sleep as possible. Glad you had a nice trip with the hubby. Hopefully we can get together soon.

thanks for the tip banane76. but where to get grapefruit seed extract? is it in a pill form or some other form that you used? i hope you have a great trip and really looking fwd to meeting too.

It's in a little bottle and it's super concentrated. I'm not sure if you can get it here though...I bought some on my last trip to Canada. You put like 5-15 drops in water or juice--grapefruit and orange hide the bitterness the best. Here is the website to the company that makes it: http://www.nutribiotic.com/

Hi mariac, when I catch a cold earlier on, I tired traditional chinese medicine (TCM), according to some friends, it is milder. I didn't take vitamin C since I am taking TCM. It did help to release the running nose and coughing... But if you are not comfortable with TCM, banana76's tips is a good idea, you may add on the garlic pill as well and not forget to take lots of water, and rest. Do take care, it is going to be colder soon.

By the way, there are some morning when I tried to clear my nose (I have sensitive nose), some blood are notice in the mucus when I clear my nose passage. I wonder is it because the weather is too dry for my nose because I did experience this when I am on my vacation in Europe during winter. Did anyone experience this during their pregnancy?

Hi everyone..
i had my structure scan last friday and everything was perfect until my OB said there's a white dot called echogenic focus in my son's left heart! which is a soft marker for down syndrome. but she said if it is isolated and without any other markers then about 90% it will be fine and will dissolve itself before the baby's born without further complication in heart..
i was feeling totally fine until my husband insist i should have amnio done..
upset for like a day not because i m scared to have amnio or baby would have downs but scared about the miscarriage..
but finally.. i had it done yesterday morning... i was scared to death especially i was all by myself with no support with hubby! but it went just fine.. a bit of pain during the process but felt just fine after. up til this morning i have no pain no complication and my little bean has been moving around non stop which is a good sign!
picking up my result on thursday i so hope everything will be fine!

That's great news Babyblue! It must have been very nervewracking, but glad you are doing well and feeling fine. It is drier outside now so be careful. You can try to keep the nasal passages moist with a saline spray, or I use a netipot and make my own salt water. You can get the saline spray in any drugstore and a friend who is also pregnant suggested it and it's been helping her...it can also keep those bugs away too!

banane76 - thanks a lot for the tip on how to acquire the grapefruit seed extract - i'll keep in mind for the future. i think i have escaped from a cold this time. i used the neti pot, took lots of ginger, lemon and honey with warm water and used a humidifier at night to decongest and that seemed to do the trick. feeling fine now except a little nasal dryness.

babyblue - i really think you are a strong and brave woman. i truly hope that everything works out well for you but no matter what happens, please know that you always have support here. please keep us posted!

btw, does anyone else worry about getting ultrasounds every month? there are some websites that suggest that they may be dangerous to baby when used frequently and others that suggest that they are totally safe. i really don't know what to believe...but it still worries me to hear these things!

Thanks banane76 and mariac!
my preliminary results of amnio came back this morning.. which shows 4 pairs of chromosomes are normal. which means my boy is highly unlikely will have T13, T18 and T21 ( down syndrome)... although this is not a 100% results but at lease its a 98% chance that i am having a perfectly healthy boy... THANK GOD!!!
i couldnt sleep much, couldnt eat much for the last couple of days and now.. thats it!!! im gonna eat a whole ton of food and sleep!!!
Mariac, i m not worry about getting ultrasounds frequently... i had like 7 ultrasounds already since preg and i actually enjoy going to ultrasounds since i get to see my little boy there.. i was worried too so i did some research and asked my OB but from what i heard and found it's totally safe for babies. Hope this help~

Wow, we are all having boys! During my 1st pregnancy, there were way more girls :) Must be the timing...lol. So glad you can eat and sleep now babyblue! That must be a huge weight off your shoulders! Sometimes I worry about the ultrasounds too. I'm probably going to make a few appts with Hulda at Annerley after my next appt and ask my doctor when the key appts with him are so I can reduce a couple more scans. I skipped the 16 week just cause I felt it wasn't necessary. First time around, I was so excited each time that I didn't want to skip the scans.

congratulations babyblue - i have a feeling your baby will be just fine so stop worrying and start enjoying! :)

banane76, i know what you mean. the scans are exciting, but i've been skipping some too just 'cause i'm not entirely comfortable. thankfully my doctor has the option of doppler although i've been to Annerley and they're great too.

btw, banane76 - does your facility offer head and shoulder massage for pregnant women? i could really use one!

Oh for sure! We have pregnancy cushions to adapt for the table so your belly has room to grow. I find them comfy because it's nice to be able to go in a different position from lying on your side all of the time.

Ladies, does anyone know of an over-the-counter antacid called gaviscon? apparently it's the same as tums which are available in the U.S. and safe during pregnancy. i heard that gaviscon is available in any pharmacy in London but not sure about HK. I can't take this heartburn anymore! My doctor suggested something called gastrogel which is also supposed to be safe but I've never heard of it before.

Thanks a lot Banane and Mariac, surely i feel so much happier than before!

Mariac, u should be able to buy gaviscon over the counter in pharmacies in HK as it's all over the commercial on TV.. sometimes i cant talk my heartburn too and the only thing i do, is to drink cold soda water and it helps a lot!
i had been feeling my baby moves around like crazy since 19 weeks and last night, i felt a big kick and move when i put my hand on my tummy and freaks me out thought there's an alien in there! and i wonder.. is it normal to feel the baby moves at where the public bones are? isnt that a bit low down?

Hi everyone,

I'm expecting my first on april 9th :O) but I won't be moving to Hong Kong until the middle of Feb. Do you mind if I join in on the conversations until Feb? I hope we can meet up in Feb (when our bumps will definately be showing ;o)) I didn't actually start showing until week 19 (now in week 23) and didn't feel anything until week 21 - very strange experience.
I've been drinking hot water with some diced fresh ginger and a slice of lemon nearly every morning and I haven't had any nausia or indigestion or heart burn......it's worth a try.

Take care everyone (be happy it's -12 degrees and snowing when I am in Germany ;O))

Hi ladies!
Welcome Forsieg! of course you can join us! We are moving to Taikooshing next Thursday - any of you live nearby Taikooshing? I am having a hard time with my daugther (almost 18 months) at the moment, she has never been a good sleeper but she's getting worse and I am finding it very tough to bend down to pat her to sleep now that my belly is big!
My belly is quite low.. so no heartburns for me yet!

I think we're gonna be moving to Tung Chung in the new year, but would still love to meet up. I totally understand Violet about the patting with a belly. It's getting harder. I've resorted to the dummy a couple times, but my little one is still only 11 months. Maybe consult with the Annerley Sleep clinic? It might be just a little tweaking is needed in her schedule? I felt a tiny bit of heartburn today, but I think I ate too much. Feeling lots of movement now at 24 weeks. Right now we're living near central but will be away for a bit during the holidays. Welcome Forseig and hope you can keep warm!

Hi Banane76
We are moving from Coastal Skyline in Tung Chung to Taikooshing! if you have any questions about TC, please let me know. We enjoyed living here for 6 months but since my husband's new job is in Quarry Bay, we have decided to move closer to his work.
We've seen professionals about our daughter's sleep issues - but I find it really tough to stick it ouw with the crying out method/ letting her cry and calming her down every few minutes - especially in the middle of the night - so stupidly we are just suffering at the moment. Sigh!
Anyway laldies, hope to meet with you all soon!

Hey Violet! Yeah, that makes sense to be living in Taikooshing. We need more space but don't want to pay more since we're in HK side and the rent keeps going up! We're thinking of Caribbean Coast. That's crappy about the sleep thing. Crying it out is really hard. Is she getting more teeth? My daughter has a terrible cough right now so that sometimes wakes her up...if she cries less than 5 min, we leave her...if it escalates too much, then I go in and give her a dummy because I think it's the cough. HOpe she gets better with her sleep. It's hard when you need the extra rest.
