We are new to Hk and are thinking of taking our 2yr & 3yr old to the beach. Any suggestions welcome.

We just went to Cheung Chau Island yesterday. Apparently the beaches there are at the top of the list for water quality in HK (not saying that much, but...). There were tons of kids swimming.

jennifer... out by us in sai kung, the water is VERY clear! i never knew it could be so clear in hk!

Thank you so much. Sai Kung does look lovely on internet...might try to go there this week. We went to Cheung Chau last week and weren't impressed. Looking forward to it!

what are you looking for in a beach? clean sand, clean water, facilities, shark net? there are some BEAUTIFUL beaches around sai kung... some easier to reach than others...

we have gone there on a couple of occasions... found the change rooms to be ummm.... disgusting! maybe they were just busy days, but i wouldn't want to take my kids in there....

Cara, which beaches would you recommend that are accessible by car in Sai Kung? Would love to try them.

Our kids (1 and 3) love Shek O, but like so many HK beaches, you can hit it on the wrong day and the water can be really dirty. It was beautiful on Sunday however - soft white sand and clear water.

the best beaches in sai kung are NOT accessible by car...
hoi ha is lovely, you park your car at the park gate and then either taxi in to hoi ha or get on the hoi ha minibus.

beware: to ANYONE wanting to come to sai kung on a weekend...it gets VERY VERY VERY busy!!! it's best to come on a weekday and have the beach to yourself!

We've been wanting to go to Sai Kung forever now - the photos I have seen of the area have been unbelievable. But it's just toooo far by public transport - And it only takes you so far. We would have to travel more than 2 hours to get to one of those beautiful places. One day...
Shek O sounds really nice. Slightly closer than Sai Kung from us, but still...

There is a HK gov't website that lists all the beaches in HK (that are looked after by HK) and what facilities they have and the clarity of the water, etc. It might be useful to pick through the lists to get an idea of which ones are good. They list every tiny little beach in HK.
I think if you're coming from a country that has loads of coastline and clean water, you're not going to be too impressed with anything. But it's not all that bad, and beggers can't really be choosers, hehe.

jennifer, it shouldn't take that long to get to sai kung... get to monkok and take the red minibus... that minibus only takes about 30 minutes to saikung town, occasionally a little longer.

Chung Hom Kok Beach is gorgeous for small kids, also has a playground where they can let off steam (as if the water & sand weren't enough)...!

We went to Clear Water Bay on Saturday. Our girls are aged 2 & 3. We travelled from Hung Hom by bus then taxi. The beach was clean, water was clear, spaces under trees for shade. It was lovely. My girls 1st day at the beach! Showers and changing facilities, toilets and a shop. Bus terminal at the beach was also handy. Got a bus and taxi back. (Much quicker getting home again) Would def go back. Thanks for the advice.
