where to stay in Hanoi /Halong bay

Planning to go on a holiday to Hanoi and Halong Bay in August, my baby will be 10.5 mths old. Any ideas where to stay?

We were in Hanoi last year and stayed at the Sofitel Metropole in central Hanoi - you can get some good offers online for it often. It had very friendly and helpful staff and great facilities overall (though we weren't travelling with a baby, so can't comment on baby facilities in particular). The location is excellent - lots of sights and cafe's are easily walkable. The Hilton Opera, which is just up the road, is in a great spot too.

One thing to note - I've heard from others who went to Halong Bay that there are quite a few used syringes on the beaches there sometimes...
 
We stayed at the Sofitel Metropole with our then 10 1/2 months old baby. The baby cot filled the room, but there was still room to move. We went in January, and it was too cold to use their outdoor pool. Our baby surprisingly really enjoyed the water puppet show, which was just a few minutes walk from the hotel. Vietnamese LOVE babies, especially the Caucasian ones, so everything was easy. We got a private one-day tour in a van to Halong Bay through the Concierge and everything was perfect. We carried our own car seat, so the baby slept fine during the car ride. The cyclo ride from the hotel to the old town was fun too.
