Where should we go/what should we do?

My hubby is in medical school here in HK, and thankfully is about to enter his final year! ( :yeah2 ) He just told me yesterday that he has two weeks off in August and we would really, really like to go somewhere for a short/inexpensive holiday, but we have no idea where we can go on a small budget. We also have two daughters, 4 y.o. and our baby will be 4 months old at the time, so we would like to do something child friendly.

So first of all, If we go to Macau, what is there to do besides casinos? (we don't gamble).

Also, some other places we are thinking of, but don't have much information on: Beijing (Great Wall etc), Philippines, Thailand...

On average, how much is airfare to these places? Can we find inexpensive things to do? Are nice hotels reasonably priced?

Any other ideas/places we should consider?

Or should we just stay in HK and do some exploring here? Any neat places we should check out here?

Personally I would give Macau a miss- there isn't much there for children/babies. It's all casinos, shopping and sightseeing. You could stay at the Westin resort there which is very nice and family orientated but a few nights there plus the ferry fare would cost the same, if not more, than a hotel and flights package to Thailand or somewhere else.

Phuket is very reasonable price wise, you can get some great packages on the Cathay website or from Travel Expert, plus you can fly direct. It's also full of families and you can spend time in your resort, at the beach, ride an elephant etc.
Koh Samui is also very nice but possibly a little bit more expensive than Phuket (I'm talking a few hundred to a few thousand dollars!) and you can also fly there direct now.

Another option is Cebu, although there isn't a lot else to do there apart from the beach.

I would recommend Thailand- the hotels are great, the food fantastic, and everything is pretty cheap once you get there. They love children in Thailand and it's just great!

Has anyone ever brought their kids to Sanya? I hear there are lots of nice beach resorts there now. Shouldn't be too expensive either.
 
Thanks for the tips! I appreciate it! Although, I won't be able to use them. lol. I realized after I posted that we had already agreed to house sit for some friends in August, and it overlaps with the time my hubby has off from school. They have pets, so we can't even leave for the weekend or anything. Oh well, I'm sure there are plenty of fun things to do here that we haven't tried yet.

We went to Sanya in April. Yalong Beach is very similar to Phuket Laguna, with a number of 4-5 start hotels located right on the beach. We stayed at the Sheraton, and enjoyed all the facilities. We were there for 4 nights and got a bit tired of eating at the hotel. Unlike Laguna, there aren't any eating options outside of the hotel. You can hop from hotel to hotel. Food at the hotel isn't'any cheaper than HK. The breakfast buffet was around RMB200/person, and the service failed in comparison to Thailand. One morning we ordered breakfast in our room. D wanted toast and they sent 4 slices of bread and the TOASTER. They charged us RMB40 for that. Overall an interesting experience, but I doubt we'll be going back.
