you must see their termination letter!

They have a letter on their hand, and that letter has the former employer's contact. Even if you can't call the former employer, you write to them and they are generally willing to give you the true reason of firing. That's being said, if you can't call, the main reason is always the helper did somthing unpleasant.
 
Can I just add that the termination letter should NOT be a photocopy. Helpers tend to white-out the pertinent information you need.
