When to start Gripe Water

Can any one tell when it is okay to start giving the Gripe Water. My son is two and half weeks old and I am not sure if I should start it or not.

Thanks.

I think you can give gripe water from birth. It does help with baby wind but I always found it difficult to give to my babies as you have to give 5ml and thats alot for an young infant to manage. I found Infacol easier as you only have to give 1ml. Try some baby massage for the wind in the tummy. There is a special technique, do a google on baby massage for colic.

oh, just to make it clear, i don't think gripe water is bad, just that i've never tried it. i actually bought a bottle but never used it, i remember instructions on there saying it's for babies x weeks and older?

Where to buy gripe water?

Does anyone know where in HK i can purchase GRIPE WATER? Is it available at Watson's and Mannings? Or stores like Bumps to Babes....?

Thanks

b2b has it also watsons and mannings. we gave our son and he is 2 he still likes it. no harm in giving it

I've heard from some mothers I know that Gripe Water is like a "miracle cure" for their babies and helps settle them--it has a tiny bit of alcohol in it which apparently mellows babies out and where I'm from people give it from birth on with no problems. We also gave our son a tiny bit of chamomile tea on a doctor's recommendation and it also helped him sleep better.

I've never seen a gripe water that has alcohol!

I guess the original formula contained 3.6% alcohol but many brands today have cut out the alcohol--there are different brands apparently.

This is the Wikipedia article:

Gripe Water

I stand corrected--the original formula was really effective because of the alcohol.:haha:

i usually buy it from chinese medication hall...i walked into mannings and watsons, but they claimed they dont carry it. I'm not aware got different brands, i've always tot there's only Woodward :)

I just bought a bottle at Watsons in the baby section. Its alcohol-free and it was relatively inexpensive - maybe $20 HKD at the most? It says for newborns to give them a half teaspoon.
I haven't used it yet, though, as my baby is still in my tummy.

It might be worth trying to get to the source of the problem.... If you are breast feeding then perhaps making sure your baby is getting enough hind milk before changing sides helps a lot. If you are bottle feeding then try winding after 30mls of milk and insisting a bit before continuing the feed. I do this will all the babies I look after and they seem to feel better on it. Also, lying your baby on his/her tummy on your knee, about 15 mins after the feed, and GENTLY swaying your baby in the head to foot direction, backwards and forwards, does miracles for the winding.
Anyway, just a suggestion as it is not always necessary to give Gripe water or Infacol, just a question of practising the winding techniques. Good luck
