When do you visit private hospitals?

Hi all,

I am 4.5 weeks pregnant and I was wondering when is an appropriate time to visit private hospitals? I am tossing up between Sanitorium and Matilda. My first OBS appointment is in a few weeks and I am not sure whether I visit the hospitals before or after that appointment.

Congratulations Sjoh! You don't need to visit the hospitals just yet. Best to see your Dr first. Are you taking any folic acid? Would recommend picking up a bottle from your nearest pharmacy.
 
Thanks Rani. The pregnancy was planned so I have been taking folic acid for the past few months. Its all very exciting. I am waiting for the Obstetrician to confirm my initial appointment in a few weeks. The high miscarriage rates do scare me though so I'm trying not to get too excited.
 
Hi Sjoh - you probably should wait until you see your obstetrician. He or she will have admitting privileges at one or more of the private hospitals, depending on how many that will limit your list. Additionally the doctor might have some insight on which might suit depending on the type of delivery and services you are looking for.

I went around 14 weeks and they told me it was still quite early!

Definitely talk to your OB first, they will be able to give you insight on which to choose and when you need to decide by. Also as mentioned in order to deliver at the various private hospitals, you need an OB with delivery privileges there.

You can visit the hospitals at anytime, Matilda has a client relations manager (Inty Ting) who you can contact and arrange a tour of the maternity facilities. The hospital websites also have photos of the facilities.
