When do you start mixing baby/toddler's laundry

When do you start mixing baby/toddler's laundry with adult laundry and use regular detergent, softener etc?
 
I started pretty early - but I did switch to the phosphate free detergent for the whole family when I did. I don't really understand the differences between the detergents and all that, but it's meant to be better/more baby friendly or something?? I don't use fabric softener - I find it doesn't do much except for clogging up the washing machine...
 
The whole family switched to phosphate free, hypoallergenic laundry detergent from the outset
 
Thanks for all the replies. I will start mixing them. Want to make sure baby is not allergic to generic detergent before we go on a trip where we will need to do laundry or send it out. Don't want to carry special detergent in addition to tons of baby stuff!
