What to bring to the hospital

I am going to stay in Matilda for the birth of our first son. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to bring for hospital stay? Another question is that I read from many books that it is a good idea to bring some gifts for the nurses and midwife who care for you over the hospital stay. I am wondering what kind of gifts are appropriate? like just a few boxes of candies or does it have to be individual gifts for them to take home with? :thanks

there are lots of threads on website about hospital bag, but off hand, i would say:

for you: nursing nightgowns/bras, nursing pillow, snacks/juices, pillow cases (some hospitals can be scratchy), socks

for baby: onsies, outfit for home, carseat

check on what does the hospital provide already for you and baby so you don't duplicate.

for gifts for the midwives/nurses etc...I sent a thank you food basket of muffins and snacks that they could all share once i was home.

The 'extras' I took (for my husband and I) were DVDs and a box set of something light and fun to watch, some little energy snacks like bars, chocolates, a laptop (they have wireless internet), an dress/top for day time that is super comfortable, easy to open for breast feeding and ok for visitors.

I got chocolates for the midwives as well.
