Hi,

I am moving to HK in a month, do not have any insurance cover and am 6 weeks pregnant. Hence I cannot afford the likes of Matilda. What is my next best option?
I am worried about the strict visiting hours and no privacy policy at QMH...

its best to go public. Private normal delivery in a shared room at hospital like adventist will cost around 120K (including private antenatal)

I think private hospitals on the Kowloon side like Baptist and Union are cheaper than the ones on the HK Island side so you could look into that.

About going private in a public hospital, there's a lot of conflicting information. Two years ago, when I was considering that route, someone on this forum who delivered at Queen Mary in the private stream paid HK$40,000 for a private room. At that time, I had signed up to pay $60,000 to 80,000 at Baptist for staying in a ward after delivery. So QMH pricate seemed like a good deal to me, though others migth disagree. However, Queen Mary is too far from where I live so I dropped the idea.Since few people take this route, your best bet would be to contact the hospital directly.

Not sure what you mean by the no privacy policy at QMH...

QMH privacy policy is very strange. You're not allowed to read your own records. If you would like to know the results of a blood test you need to wait for a Dr.

I think you can apply for any records you want from the hospital authority. I've done so at united Christian and it's fairly simple. Once the nurse just let me copy down the results on a piece of paper. If you want a photocopy you need to apply, it takes longer to get records if want sonogram copies.

Yes you can apply for a copy of your records. Takes 8 weeks at QM. Have seen numerous patients pleading at the Records Dept for faster turn around. However, there is a new trial scheme at QM where a private Dr can view your records electronically. So if you want a second opinion, you can sign up and ask your GP/ Specialist to logon and they can view it.
