Hello,

we are planning to hire a "live - in" Amah/helper. We have no furniture yet, and I was curious if anybody can help me to find out what you will need? Of course a bed, a cabinet...TV, DVD??? What do you provide?
And is there any recommendation where to buy the furniture?

We are also still looking for one...is there any recommendation for somebody who is experienced with a western family?

Thank you very much in advance!!!

Heike

we provide bed, cabinet, hangers, personal hygenie products - like shampoo & bath gel, towels, toothbrush & paste. we don't provide TV or DVD. our helper got her own VCD player once she saved enough money & she didn't want my MIL to find out. but we did & we told her as long as they watch it when theyhave finished work it's ok.

great place for helpers furniture - jade rattan. in fact, if you search on this forum, you'll see quite a lot of thread on helpers furniture & what ppl provide & where to find one.

Besides what Carang mentioned, I also provide my helper with a cheap mobile phone and subsidize her with a small fixed amount for her local charges. She really appreciates that gester.

We provided basic furniture ( bed, chest of drawers, clothes rail, bed side table) TV and DVD player. We got a really nice bed on AsiaXpat, the rest came from Ikea and the Japan Home Centre. Personally we don't let our DH use our computer.

Thanks, Our room is too small I think to get something second hand, we can put a bed of 1,80 m x 80 cm...so I think I have to order one...

yeah, i also provide my helper with cheap mobile phone & subsidise calling card for the 1st month. my old helper appreciates it, but the current one takes it for granted.

...that's interesting, haven't thuoght about the mobile phone.
How about the aircon? I think in summer the room is really too hot! How do you deal with that? Can somebody recommend an aircon system or do you provide a fan and that's enough?

It depends on your helper. Some helpers are not used to air-con and prefer fans. Some, however, prefers air-con. Ours prefer using an electric fan with timer function.

We're putting in an air-con for our helper. We bought her a fan but it's just not enough. Those small rooms get so hot. i'd hate for her to not sleep well at night and be grumpy all day long with my son.

We're getting an air-con from Fortress. they're not too expensive. Maybe $1000 or $1500.

We haven't given her a tv but supply everything else, new bed, bed sheets, blankets, toiletries, wardrobe etc.

Thanks, When I found a helper, I will ask her firt if she prefers an aircon or a fan...I think this must be provided, I would not sleep in the heat.

By the way, I ordered furniture today at "Jade Rattan", Wanchai! Great people, very helpful, came to measure and not expensive. They know how to store a lot in a small room...she will have a great room - we made the best out of it with a bed and a lot of storage underneath, and two extra cabinets tailor made!
