I thought I'd ask what are your baby's favourite books as I am always on the lookout for new ones for my 21 month old.

My LO's current favourites are "Owl Babies", anything by Richard Scarry, "Duck in a Truck", "The Gruffalo" and anything with construction vehicles, trucks or cars!

I LOOOVVEEE the Hairy Macleary books - my baby is still "-7 weeks" (7 weeks til due date) but other kids I know ALL loved Hairy Macleary - awesome books, you should check them out...

In Australia, my Mum kept ALL my kids books and I plan on raiding the collection when I go back and getting all my favourites - I haven't told her yet though...

ROBERT MUNSCH, ROBERT MUNSCH, ROBERT MUNSCH!

i have been reading his books to my private students, my own children and now the kids at my playgroup. and they ALL LOVE HIM!!!!!!

they love him so much, that i went onto amazon.ca and ordered 12 of his books in chinese (i have the same ones in english) for the kids in the mandarin class and my own kids. at about $140/book (inc shipping) i still think they are worth it...

my personal favourites:
MORTIMER (about a little boy who doesn't want to go to sleep)
I HAVE TO GO (a little boy who is learning how to use the toilet)
GET OUT OF BED! (a little girl who doesn't wank to wake up)
STEPANIE'S PONYTAIL (self explanitory)
THE PAPER BAG PRINCESS (a princess who saves her "prince" from a dragon)
LOVE YOU FOREVER (i cannot make it through this book without ending up a quivering, crying mess!)

Love you forever..definately my favorite book.
Me too, can't finish the book without being teary eyed..haha

back on topic, as for my baby, now 10 months, he loves to flip through books with faces of babies!! he'll smile at the pictures and sometimes kiss the baby faces =)

Also, "The Going to Bed Book" by Sandra Boynton...perfect bedtime book.

Our favorites are --

1) Goodnight Moon (Margaret Wise Brown) - This is the book that we'd sign to every night before bed with both our kids
2) The Moon in My Room - This has a night light that the kids love to press to turn on
3) Hairy McLarry series
4) Julia Donaldson books (Gruffalo, Spiffiest Giant, Sharing a Shell, etc.)
5) Eric Carle books (esp. The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Brown Bear, Brown Bear)
6) Someday by Alison McGhee - I always choke and get teary-eyed when I get to the last line.

My son's current favorite is My Little Sister Ate One Hare by Bill Grossman. He cackles and laughs each time we read it; I guess it has humor that 3yo find really hilarious.

interesting that your version of the Julia Donaldson book is called the "Spiffiest Giant"....ours is the "Smartest Giant"!

i LOVE "Guess how Much I Love you" by Sam McBratney.

My 8 month year old son loves:
1. All Eric Carle Books
2. All Karen Katz's flip books
3. Corduroy
4. Click, Clack Moo: Cows that Type.

love you forever....tried reading it to a playgroup of 8 kids plus parents/helpers... quite embarrassing that i couldn't finish it and had to have my assistant do the honours... i was a snivelling mess... the parents all thought it quite hilarious!

I've done a bit of googling - I think the UK version (the one we have) is 'Smartest Giant' and the US or maybe Aus version is 'Spiffiest'. I didn't even know there was such a word as 'spiffiest'...learn something new every day!

The others of Julia Donaldson that I love are "Sharing a Shell", "Monkey Puzzle" and "Room on the Broom".

I also love all the Dr Seuss ones.

I think you're right, KatBoo. :) I just assumed that "spiffy" is a British term. I'll have a look at our book tomorrow (can't go in now, kiddies are asleep).

Others that we like:
- We're Going on a Bear Hunt
- Go, Dog, Go
- Richard Scarry's "Cars, Trucks, and Things That Go"
- Rooster Can't Cock-a-Doodle-Doo
- Things That Are Most in the World
- Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
- My Many-Colored Days (Dr. Seuss)
- What Makes a Rainbow? (This one is beautiful with colored silk ribbons making up a rainbow).

agreed, sandra boynton books are a fav and dr seuss (the shorter ones like the eye book. she doesn't have the attn span for green eggs and ham yet)

My LO also really likes "Go Dogs, Go". He also likes books by Byron Barton like "My Car" and "Machines at Work".

carang, I totally hear you. You're so brave to even try and attempt to read it in front of an audience. I get choked up merely describing the book to perpetual strangers.

*snivelling mess* Haha - wish I was there. :)

well, i tried it again today, and only had to stop twice to wipe the tears and once to blow my nose.... i had told the parents about it and they REALLY wanted to hear it, so..... a fool of myself, i made... again!

Answering this thread's question:
My baby loves the following:
- Sandra Boynton's Moo, Baa, La La La and Not the Hippopotamus;
- Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Very Busy Spider;
- Julia Donaldson's The Gruffalo and Monkey Puzzle;
- Rod Campbell's Dear Zoo;
- Margaret Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon; and
- Dr. Seuss, several books - can't name them all.

I'm afraid I can recite each and every one of these books by heart. That's how often I have to read them. Need to get new books. I'm going to try out some of those suggested here.

Thanks, mommies!
