Were you influenced by feng shui when naming bub?

Hi All,

We came across a 'feng shui' website and plugged in the chinese name we had selected for our as yet unborn baby. The result was that the name is not 'ideal' ~ had bad vibes for things such as health and relationships.

The problem is, we really like the name...but now that we know the negative feng shui, we don't know what to do! What we don't know won't hurt us, but what we know will always be on our minds...

What would you do??

I guess it depends on the credibility of the site? I mean, is it trying to sell you the service of naming your child for you? Then it *may* be more likely for it to say not ideal?

Also, from what I believe, the feng shui calculations depends on the hour/day which the baby was born. So.... you can't really do the calculations on your unborn baby!

We had ours done by my uncle and my friend. I don't know much about it but I also know there's a website telling you the balance of each element the person has (based on hour/date of birth) eg wood, water, soil, metal, fire. The gist of it is that you try to balance the 5 elements by naming the child to include his/her lower elements in the name... but there's also things about clashing elements and complementary elements... and number of strokes..... but I think it depends how far you want to take it, really.

Good luck!

i'm married to a local chinese man, and all i can say is that i am SOOOOOO thankful he doesn't believe in all that....stuff!

for me, naming a baby is something so special and almost sacred that it has NOTHING to do with "luck". the name should come from somewhere inside of you...not from a feng shui master, nor from a feng shui website.

if you really want to follow feng shui, then see what other names it comes up with... then make your decsion.

i believe that your name has nothing to do with your future. your name is only part of what makes you, you. your personality and life experiences are MUCH more important when determining health and relationships.

Yes, it should definitely be a name that you like. I've had so many friends that went to the masters for names, didn't like what they came up with and had such a problem deciding. Hence, going to more masters for other names etc etc...

For us, our attitude was simply because we had no idea what Chinese name to give him, so why not base it on Feng Shui? In the end, we got a name that had great meaning for us "immense happiness"! =D

Thank you all!

I feel like I'm contradicting myself...while I say I won't be hung up about feng shui etc, now that I've seen something negative, it's in the back of my mind. I'm trying to think on how many ppl who 'don't' let feng shui affect them, well, they're doing just fine!

We feel that naming our child is our first gift to him and had thought long and hard to come up with this name. We still love the meaning of the name (yes, we have tried to come up with other phonetically sounding words but there aren't too many!), so maybe it'll be a case of ignoring the feng shui aspect ~ afterall, we don't let feng shui run any other part of our lives...

We never considered Feng Shui in naming our daughter (her Chinese name). My husband's Chinese isn't the best - so we had our Father in law give us some ideas, and in the end, we took ideas from what he gave us, but we came up with the name ourselves. The things that were important to us were:

a) it must NOT sound rude/weird in English, since we're predominantly English speaking. It must be relatively easy for a non-native speaker to pronounce.
b) it needs to have a good, solid meaning.
c) we wanted it to somewhat "match" her English name...

In the end, we chose a name that we LOVE - actually, in some ways her Chinese name has more significance to us than her English name (which we mainly chose because it was one that we could agree on ;) )

The beauty of picking a Chinese name is that you can pretty much invent a name. Of course there are things that are commonly done and commonly not done - characters that are used frequently, infrequently, mainly for boys, mainly for girls... but you have so much to work with, I think take the opportunity and come up with something that YOU adore.

And like you said, if you don't really use feng shui in your every day life, why let it predict something that should be so special and personal to you??

i did have my son's name done by a feng shui person. not worth it. waste of money. it depends if you believe in it or not. my family does (i don't). would not do it again as not so fond of the name. other people i know who had it done also regret it and did not do it again with second child.

Absolutely not. We solicited suggestions from family and friends that we respected, but in the end, my husband and I chose the English and Chinese names for our children - which we LOVE. You'll be raising the children and be using these names more than anyone else. You'll want to pass your children your values, so the child's name should reflect those values, not someone else's. It's a bit of a landmine to go to anyone else, especially if that person is going to be offended if you don't take their suggestion. Same thing with a feng shui person - you don't want some third party to be creating division in your family because you did/did not follow one feng shui master or another. Why go there???

I don't think you should get upset with what a website tells you. If you believe in chinese "ba zi", then you should get it done properly by someone you trust. And if you don't believe in it, just don't bother with it - frankly how accurate can a website be????

I have studied the chinese bazi before under a master, and I do believe the whole system/culture did not survive for thousands of years if it was pure superstition, there is a loigc and application to it, but you just need to have the right attitude to the whole thing , know what it can do, what its limitations are etc etc.

suggests you think of a new name. if u r really not influence by the feng shui, then dont check at all.
checking and knowing , and trying to forget the bad things it says.. but in the future.. if something not so good happens, you can't help thinking, could it be the name?

My uncle also said, you (the parents) are the ones "in luck" (or some similar translation), so your "good fortune" will guide you to choosing the right name. ie go with your heart!

Since you don't REALLY believe in it anyway, maybe you can keep that thought "in mind", forget what the website said, wait til the baby is born and then see if the name you like suits him/her. Maybe some other inspiration will come to you, or maybe your chosen name will just simply feel like the right one... You have 1.5 months to decide after the baby is born, right? :P I wouldn't stress about it now. :)

If you don't believe in fung shui yourself, don't follow the website. I wouldn't trust websites giving fung shui advice in the first place. My father-in-law gave us a whole list of names to choose from which were all given the OK by some fung shui person. I didn't mind this because my husband and I have no idea about chinese names. I of course asked my parents and some other friends if the name we chose sounded OK. My advice is, if you choose to believe fung shui, get a 'proper' fung shui master to help you out, otherwise, trust in yourself because you're the parents.

I did not have this opportunity and think it would have been interesting to see what names would be recommended by the feng shui experts but ultimately it has to be a name that the parents like.
