HI all, my son 4 years old has developed chalazion (eye pimple) under his eyelid, it is reddish and I have taken him to many doctors,even ophthalmologist, they prescribed eye drops and hot compresses but it is not working , they recomment a surgery but I am a bit scared of it as he is just 4 . Don't know what to do, is there anyone who can recommend any good opthalmologist in HK?
 
sanatorium hospital (happy valley) used to have an opthamologist specializing in pediatric cases.... i dont recall the name but a friend had consulted for her daughter and was quite happy. perhaps you could call the hospital / visit their opd and get an appointment (?)

My daughter's was blinking her eyes a lot , my MIL boil "kam ngan fa" - gold silver flower and wipe her eyes with the water. She is fine after that. You might wanna give this a try.
 
Our son had something similar and had surgery at 18 months old to take it out. Will look back on our medical records and come back with the name of the eye surgeon we used. He was put under general anesthetic at Canossa. Was in at 7am ish and we could take him home at about 3pm. Involves a small cut and then popping out the ball of stuff. The doctor we saw told us to do hot compresses as well but after doing them for ages and the eye drops, our sons one never went away either. He has recovered brilliantly and no scar that I can see. It was pretty traumatic having to hold him while they administered the anesthetic but otherwise he was fine. Will report back tomorrow with the name of the doctor we used.

How long did you wait to have the surgery? My son is already 4 and he has got the pimple for 3 months, I'm really scared of the anesthetic to be injected in him again, as he got one in the summer for circumcision and that was already a traumatic experience for him. With your son, how long did it take him to gain conscious? was his eye bandaged afterwards and are you using any cleanser for his eyes?

I think we waited about 2 months between the lump first appearing and having the surgery. We used the hot compresses and the drops and the eye specialist said it was unlikely to go away by itself and could get bigger and get it in way of the eye. It was covered by our insurance so we got an appointment the next week after we decided to do it.

He was not unconscious for very long. The operation was about half an hour - an hour and he woke up about half an hour after he came out. He was very unset when he woke up (as is normal we were told) and we cuddled him while he cried. Once he calmed down, he was happy to watch television for a while. He couldn't have anything to eat or drink for an hour or more after he woke up. Then could have a little water, then milk then some food.

He had a patch on his eye for a few days. We didn't use any cleanser on his eye but I think we may have had some antibiotic drops for a while after until the cut healed.

My husband had to hold him down for the general anaesthetic and it was quite traumatic for both of them as they had to put the mask over his face (I was pleased I wasn't the one doing it). But it was quite quick and then he was under. As your son is older (4 years ?) it may be easier to explain to him what is going to happen and that way he may be less scared. As our son was only 18 months old, he was terrified.

Good luck. The eye specialist we used was nice and Canossa was ok too.

I am also going to do the surgery as his lump has been there for more than 2 months now so will check with the doctor you recommended. Hope it will be okay and the procedure won't take long.
