URGENT!! URGENT!! Pls advise!!

I am in need of URGENT advise. I am 5 weeks pregnant. I just had a Urine test & U/S screening in QE. The result of urine test is +ve but the U/S dint show the fetus. And I have an appointment with Gyno on Monday. Is this normal that too early to detect fetus in U/S??
I deliberately need the advise from experts here. I am too much worried.

it is still VERY early to detect the embryo. there probably isn't even a heartbeat yet. maybe there will be next week. usually at this point they might only see a small sac.

the u/s that they did, was it a normal ultrasound over the tummy or was it through the vagina? through the vagina is usually more accurate at this early stage of pregnancy.

remember that although you count as 5 weeks, it is only 3 weeks since the egg and the sperm met... not very long at all.

i'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
PS> NONE of us are experts here, we are only other mothers that have gone through similar experiences.

The same thing happened to me. They saw a sac but no fetal pole. I was petrified but all turned out well, i have a happy, healthy almost 5 month old baby girl. Another friend had the same experience. try to relax, as hard as that is. Did they do a vaginal or abdominal scan? (mine was vaginal, but still didn't show - my friends was abdominal)

I also just found out I am pregnant. I had my first U/S scan done at 6 weeks, and all they saw was an empty (no fetal pole) sac the size of a small marble (1cm x 1cm). The doc said he was concerned because it was so small, but I went back this week (at 8 weeks) and it's now on track with the "growth" chart. Even saw heartbeat, head, eye (profile view) and arms!

IMHO, I wouldn't worry about not seeing anything yet. Maybe in a week or two. Ultrasounds are notorious for not showing the whole picture, especially when it's SO small.

PS- My GP didn't see anything on the U/S, only when I went to the gyno did it show up. I actually wondered if GP really knew how to work the U/S properly, because it was the same day! (Also, having a full bladder can apparently make a difference in what they can see, so make sure you go the gyno with some liquid in you!)

Thanks all for your kind and quick replies.

I had an abdominal scan. The doc was GP. He advised to get admitted into the hospital but I kindly refused. And he gave me an earliest appointment with Gyno on Monday.

I had a scan in my first pregnancy by Gyno(Private) at same time and found everything normal. Thatz make me worried now.

My second one was miscarriaged at 8 weeks. I had U/S in QE too(A&E section). I was bleeding that time. The doc said heart-beat and everything was normal and eventually ended up in miscarriage the next day.

So, I suspect the quality of docs in A&E section on diagnoising the pregnancy matter is not up2 standard.

I am bit relaxed now after reading your replies..

Thanks Ladies and keep you updated.

i was in exact situation as yours, but 2 weeks later i saw the fetus on the ultrasound.

Don't worry, i know the waiting is hard.

I have had several early U/S and have never seen a heart beat at 5 weeks (even with a vaginal U/S). I know it is difficult to wait but hang in there. Just try to stay calm and in a few weeks you will know..

I had a adbomenal U/S today and still cant detect the fetus. Then had a Internal U/S and Dr. confirmed the fetus inside the womb. I am having spotting and Dr. said its normal sometimes but still need to monitor for few days. And also no heartbeat today. The Dr. scheduled U/S after two weeks.

I am again start to worry.

Keep Pray for me ladies.

Cheers

Some light spotting around this time is normal. Also it is normal to not see the heart beat for another week or two. Probably the best thing you can do at the moment is to get some rest and try to not worry too much about it. I know that's hard though... but just look after yourself, and if you do that, you're looking after the baby as well!!

Hina, my thoughts are with you and I really hope this works out for you. Just try to keep occupied and not think about it too much (easy to say and a LOT harder to do I know!).

Don't bother with the abdominal ultrasounds. I had one when I was at 6 weeks and the doctor couldn't find it. My heart dropped until I rushed over to the next hospital with the inter-vaginal u/s and the doctor there found it.
Just stick with the inter-vaginal u/s at this point - it's just too early. There's no way they can hear the heartbeat at this point. The fetus has got one but it's undetectable to our technology. I heard my little guy's heartbeat at 8 wks and it was pure music. But I was at a fancy private hospital with top-notch equipment. Believe me, I paid for it, hehe.
I'm now at 25 weeks and still worry about almost every little cramp and such, but much much less than before.
It's all about worrying, I know.
Your doctor is right about the spotting possibly being normal - my friend bled throughout her otherwise healthy pregnancy. It could also be remnants of your last period or your missed one. Some women even bleed monthly a little bit like they're on their period. We're all different.
If I were you I would try to get as much rest as possible right now. Stay off your feet. Good tv/movies/mags/books, things to get your mind off it and to relax a bit. And yummy food.
Best of luck to you. I hope to hear a positive update soon.

Most GPs (and some OBs) simply don't have the equipment to be able to detect either a fetal sac or heart beat so early.

It is quite common not to see a heartbeat until 6-7 weeks, and again, it depends on the quality of the equipment and scanner.

A&E probably isnt the place to go. They don't have the time or resources to deal with issues that are not serious/life threatening/injuries. If something were to go wrong (and I hope it doesn't), they can't do anything about it, anyway.

Good luck - let us know what happens.

Thanks for updating Hina. You are in my thoughts. Remember that many mothers have been through this same thing, and we do understand how you feel. It's heartwrenching but most often turns out well.

hi
the waiting is difficult, i am so sorry.
i did ivf with both my successful pregnancies and at the clinics, they will not do an ultrasound before 6weeks (and even then, reluctantly), because of the difficulty of locating a heartbeat. prior to six weeks, all that seems evident is the fetal pole.

the waiting is agony, but in this circumstance, medicine is on your side...dr's do not expect to see a h/b at 5 weeks.

vaginal u/s is much more telling at this stage of the game. where the embryo implanted can also have a great deal to do with located the h/b on an abdominal scan.

good luck, kitten.

I was in the same situation as yours and others in this forum, but 2 weeks later, by the 7th to the 8th week, i saw the fetus and heartbeat on the ultrasound.

Don't worried. It just takes time for the fetus to grow.

I had a U/S today. The Dr. was prepared to do internal U/S but I requested her to do the abdomenal U/S first. Thanks God, the fetus was deducted and the hear beart too. The Dr. said the things are getting normal and immediately gave me an appointment for regular pre-natal checkups.
I went to ACC for registration and had an appointment with mid-wife. After 30mins long interviewd with midwife, went for blood tests. They will notify me for (if) any abnormalities.
I am quite relaxed now. I was almost in bed-rest for the last two weeks and the spotting is stopped now for few days. And I hope the rest will go on normal track.
Thanks all for your prayers, ladies. Pls do keep your prayers for rest of the days.:flower:

Thanks God!! things are going in a right track. I am in 14 weeks now. I had U/S with Dr. James in MongKong. I used him for my first baby too. He is very friendly and good care. I am surely recommend him. The baby's growth is normal. I dont want to know the gender but my hubby want to know. So the Dr. revealed him. Keep finger cross for the rest of the days, should go normal.
Could it be accurate to detect the gender in 14 weeks?
