Hello,


i am expecting a boy this autumn and the doctor told me that his kidneys are slightly dilated. He also told me that in most cases the kidneys become normal after the birth. Did anyone had a such an experience?
 
My baby girl had the same problem. It's more common in boys. It sometimes resolves towards the end of pregnancy but my daughter's didn't. So she was monitored right after birth and then had a couple of ultrasounds as a baby before she was cleared. She's totally fine now.

My baby has dilated kidneys too. It didn't correct itself after delivery. We are having renal testing tomorrow and next month. Worse comes to worse, surgery may be required.

Hi Azama,

My baby just went for the renal dynamic scan and was told that he needs to fast 4 hours before the scan. However, such requirement was crossed out in his appointment slip. He needs to be re-scheduled for a scan next month. Recommend you to call the hospital to check again on requirements ahead of time if your baby (touch wood) needs to do the scan.

Thank you for this. I am sure that your baby will be fine:) ! Do you have a baby girl or boy? In which hospital did you deliver? I have talked with the doctor and he told me in any case the situation is solvable.
 
Ladies, when I was pregnant and my baby was diagnosed with dilated kidneys I had contacted another mum on this forum who I recalled went through a similar thing with her child. She recommended Dr Richard Chiu, who specialises in nephrology and was quite senior in the public hospital before moving to private practice. I never saw him myself as my daughter didn't need it in the end, but he might be a good person to see in case you'd like a second opinion.

My daughter had her scans at United Christian Hospital, the radiologist was senior and very good. I think she was declared fine at six months.
 
Baby boy. Delivered in Queen Mary. Yes, worse case scenario is surgery but some children's kidneys resolve themselves naturally before they turn 5. If the kidney is 5 cm dilated or more or if the baby catches urinal tract infection, then surgery is required. If not, then the baby will need to undergo regular checkups and monitoring.
