Two helper questions

Can anyone help with the following:
1. When you employ a helper, are they on some sort of probationary
period to start?
2. How do I go about getting a part-time helper until I have had a chance to find someone full-time. What can I expect to pay for this?

1. There isn't a probabtionary period for helpers.

2. Part time helpers charge anywhere from $40-60/hour. As its illegal for a Foreign Domestic Helper to work part-time, you will not see notices on bulletin boards etc. The best way to find one is through word of mouth, ask the other helpers in yr complex, friends etc.

Thanks Rani. So what do you do if you sign up a full-time helper for two years (as per the normal contract) and after one month you just don't like them? I think a personality fit is a big issue when you're going to be living with someone. Or what about if you have to leave to go back to your home within two years?

You can always give the helper one month notice or 1 month salary if you want her to leave within the 2 year contract time.

If you want to hire some part time workers, there are a lot of local helper in Hong Kong. I do not know if they will understand English fully, but at least they are legal. You do not want to get in legal trouble in a foreign country.
