twins - what sort prenatal testing?

Am 7 weeks pregnant with twins after IVF, 39yo. My dr has said that for twins they can't do all the usual tests they do for singletons due to unavailable data on probabalities. Any other multiple mums out there? He said my tests will be U/S nuchal fold at 10-11 weeks and amniocentis at 17 weeks. Does that sound right? Can't do CVS. Of course I'm worried that if the amnio results take 2 weeks then it will be 19 weeks before I find out about any problems.

We are 18 weeks pregnant today with triplets and are seeing Dawkins who has now refered us to QMH where we'll deliver. Dawkins did the U/S nuchal fold at 12 weeks which was negative for any problems.

At 17 weeks he did a fairly up close and personal scan of the babies lower spines, pelvic areas, facial structures to see if he could foresee any other problems. Again, everything negative along with normal growth, heartbeats, heart chambers etc.

Other than the normal preg tests for a singleton (like baseline blood tests etc.) there is not much more we expect to do, except for a very in-depth u/s in about 1 - 2 weeks where the QMH drs will measure every little piece of our babies. We are not doing the amniocentis test since it is too high risk for us.

There is an EXCELLENT book entitled, "What to expect when you're expecting twins, triplets or quads." You probably won't find it in HK. A friend of ours mailed us a copy a few months ago and I picked up a 2nd copy through Amazon while on a US business trip a few weeks ago. I highly recommend ordering this book. If you want to borrow one of our copies while waiting for yours to arrive drop me an e-mail or private message.

We have to decide sometime soon whether we want to do an amnio. I have read in various places that the risk of miscarriage after amnio on twins is approx 5x higher than with singletons - so I am not sure whether I really want to do this.

Has anyone else had experience with amnio or other prenatal testing on twins? We will do the NT and bloodtests next week (13 weeks).

Thanks!

hi, just want to second Seb's dad on the book recommendation. I actually found my copy of , "What to expect when you're expecting twins, triplets or quads" at Dymocks in IFC.

expecting twins but decided against amnio, despite the NUP showing slightly hightened risk. we decided to rely on the u/s examinations instead. if you want a second opinion, i'd recommend dr ghosh. he'd do the amnio earlier i think.

best of luck!
