turning over in bed

hi all, my 5mth old has now starting flipping from back to belly and he wakes up when that happens. At least I think thats why. Its always around 3-4am, he starts crying and I've found him on his belly several times..

This started last week.

My question, do i turn him back so that he's sleeping on his back? or do you just let them get used to sleeping however they will as they keep moving so much these days!

it really depends on what kind of cry it is, i would say. it is natural for babies to start turning over, the question is: does he know how to turn back by himself?

if not, i'd say, yes, you can turn him back if you like.

if he CAN turn back over, then i'd say no.

it is not necessary that 5 month olds sleep the entire night on their back...if they can turn over and back again by themselves.

thanks carang. yes during the day, he can turn himself over both ways. At night I suspect he's startled himself awake when he flips to his belly. so I guess I should just let him sleep both ways eventually.

if he can turn both ways, i would leave him and let him figure it out. i don't think you want to get up every 30 mins to turn him over. i have learned that if they want something bad enough, every baby will figure out a way to do it.

I agree. It might be best if you`re not there turning him over all the time as he might rely on you and then it will turn into a habit.
I would just try to pat him back to sleep in the position he woke up in. Unless he started to cry harder, of course.
