Training baby to sleep with benadril cough syrup

my son has suffered NUMEROUS ear infections in his short 3.5 years... we've had both amoxicillin & augmentin at different times. they both seem to work for my boy... keep in mind that these are BOTH anti-biotics. in such a case as ear infection, i would DEFINITELY continue. if left untreated, the eardrum could burst, or he could lose hearing! follow the doctor's orders to the letter! DO NOT stop if he 'appears' to be getting better! the same as with any course of anti-biotics, the ENTIRE course MUST be finished, or else next time, your boy could be resistant to them!!!

i have given my little ones dimetapp on occasion when they are coughing etc. but i follow the directions to the T. no estimating with amounts or timings...

if you are giving antibiotics (which are often essential to cure the infection) you might also want to consider giving infant / children's probiotics. this will replace the good bacteria that is also being killed off by the medication. Udo's choice does some that you can get at 360.
my doctor always gives them to us at the same time any antibiotics are needed.

thanks mlbw, carang, aussie mum, i was so worried i also spoke to my doctor from my home country and he said that augmentin and dimetapp should not be a prob so i feel much better now....he said i should also give him nutrolin for his loose motions.....since augmentin is giving him loosies which my pediatrician did not tell me about ....i thought they were frm the plums i was feeding him.....i don;t know whether i should change my doctor or not....she does have a tendency to give strong medecine but if it works and is not harmful ....she is my doc since my baby was born .....then whats the harm? what do u all say? also pl. give me the brand name for amoxicillin and probiotics....tahnks again

the other thing to do when the baby is on anti-biotics is to change the nappy IMMEDIATELY after a BM...otherwise they might develop nappy rash very quickly. our kids would get blisters within minutes of having a poop if their nappy wasn't changed immediately

OMG!! I can't believe such irresponsible Pediatrician still practice in HK! I would never drug a baby for "helping her sleep better". I know it's so tempting to do it when your bb is driving you crazy with no sleep. i know exactly what you'r going thru, co my daughter was exactly like that. i resort to my helper & husband.

i think your son is using you as a pacifier to sooth himself to sleep. you can try: a real pacifier, but you might have a problem when he accidentally spits out the pacifier & cry (which was my problem). my daughter also had a set routine & schedule, but she was still waking up a lot at night. or you can try putting baby in bed & just patting the bump.

i heard the sleep clinic at Annerley Midwoves really work, also.

or you can bring your little one to a very good homeopath, Dr. Sonal at IMI (imi.com.hk). she specialises in children, very very nice person & caring too. they sell a good probiotic for babies at IMI. and you can also try energy healing, which finally helped me: balancehealth.com.hk make an appmt with Victor.

if i were you, i'd change doc without a doubt. i don't like docs who prescribe heavy medication for small children. i think we should try to let the child's immune system fight off infection instead doing the fighting for them. there are several peds here whom are popular who doens't give as much medication. we go to dr. thondup, who's very caring & nice.

good luck!

Dr. sonal will defintely be able to help you with the ear infection & cold/cough. those are easy stuff for her. do make an appmt asap, so you don't always have to give your 6mth old drugs. tel 2523-7205

I wouldn't give the Dimetapp ... it's proven not to be effective for small children and of the shelves in the US already. Your child is only 6 months old. Things that I've used for a cold, vaporub on their chests, one of those menthol plug ins (not sure they have them here, in the US called Sudacare and made by Pediacare), suction their noses and use a saline solution ...

In terms of antibiotics, a lot of doctors are pretty indecisive whether it's OK to use for ear infections because ear infections are getting more difficult to treat because of the use of antibiotics. Some doctors will tell you to wait it out. Mine had ear infections once while travelling and since we had to get in an airplane twice within the same week I was prescribed antibiotics. My twin girl had Augmentin (and something a lot worse and stronger later) at 6 months when she developed a very nasty and pretty dangerous bacterial infection, called MRSA. Augmentin couldn't even help her, so she was hospitalized and put on Cleocin. Very very nasty, but she was fine within days.

Again, there are plenty of sleep books out, you just have to find one that suits you.

Hang in there...eventually they will sleep...I know you are desperate but please do not drug your baby. Unfortunately, with kids there is no easy way out. Your doctor is very wrong for suggesting this to you. Try to get another opinion about how to face the sleep challenges. I would be happy to talk to you over the phone for some emotional support if you need it.

Mushi, I'm so glad you've decided not to give Benadryl. I did give it to my then 13 month old when flying from London to Hong Kong and regretted it - he was hyper the entire way and it was a horrid flight for me and the other passengers.

A question for you:
How is your baby's sleep during the day? Perhaps the reason your baby is waking up so much at night is his or her day time sleep - I've read both the Marc Weissbluth book mentioned here, plus Gina Ford's Contented Little Baby book and think both make the excellent point that when a baby has very little sleep during the day it actually does not mean that the baby will sleep more during the night to make up for it- going to sleep overtired actually means less sleep - for the best night time sleep the baby has to be well rested during the day. I have found this to be absolutely true with both my children.

It is difficult for me to say more as I don't know what your baby does during the day, but when you are sleepless it is so hard to think straight so I do know how you are feeling and happy to help. If you keep track of what your baby is doing during the day and post it here, it will be easy to see if a pattern is emerging -- for example if the baby settles down better at night when he or she has had more sleep during the day.

Hope things improve soon..

Sorry I meant keep track of how your baby sleeps during the day for yourself, not necessarily post it on the forum! But if you want to PM me, I am happy to help out if I can although I'm a little sleepless myself these days :haha:
