Total cost for deliverying with Dr. Patrick Chan or dr. Grace Cheung

For those moms that have recently delivered with Dr. Patrick Chan or Dr. Grace Cheung, can you please share your total cost including prenatal visits and all hospital fee?
I would like to get an idea as my insurance have cap.
 
I don't know exact costs but I'm pretty sure that Patrick Chan would be cheaper, he's one of the cheapest doctors for delivering in Matilda - and from experience (but I didn't deliver with him), he's a wonderful doctor! I would recommend him in a heart beat.
 
I'm with Dr. Chan. Each appt. costs between $850-$950 unless there is an extra test or ultrasound (the 20 week one). I don't know about other doctors but Dr. Chan doesn't schedule appointments unnecessarily. I'm 32 weeks pregnant and have seen him just once a month until I get to 34 weeks. You can ask his nurse for the hospital charge. It's $19000 for a 4 bedroom ward as I recall from the list.

His bedside manners are great. Very quick to return your calls (should something happen). I can't recommend him highly enough.
 
I just delivered with Dr. Chan in Feb. Both my husband and I recommend him to everyone we know who's asked for a referral. The check-ups were anywhere from 850-1200 and that includes a scan every time. In terms of hospital charge, I had a scheduled c-section and stayed in a private room so the Matilda package deal for that is 55,000. Dr. Chan charged 42,000 for delivery. And then there's other charges like Anesthesiologist charge, Paediatrician charge, etc ... total bill was about 120,000. Thankfully insurance covered all of it - including meals that my husband ate at the hospital :)
 
To get your total cost you need to factor in the Obstatrician's fees (antenatal and delivery), Sonographer, Paediatrician and Anaethetist (if you want epidural or c-section).

Grace Cheung and Lucy Lord (her partner) offer a package to patients who choose to stay in a 4 bed room at the Matilda or Adventist to deliver- in Jan 2010 tht was advertised at HK$36000 and includes the antenatal appointments (with scan each time), the delivery and care whilst at the hospital.

On a PAYG basis, their charges are similar to Patrick Chan ($950 for a check up) and these are monthly until you get past 32 weeks, then go to fortnightly.

I have met Grace once (she was covering for Lucy) and got a good impression of her.

The charges by the hospital are set by the hopsital and dont vary by Obs BUT be aware that your Obs might charge more for the delivery if you take a private room, as may the paediatrician, anaethetist etc.
 
Just to add, you could do mix and match- have private antenatal care using your insurance and then deliver at the public hospital. However, not all private Obs will accept patients who deliver at a public hospital (Grace Cheung doesnt) so check before you make the appointment.
 
FYI - Dr Chan does accept patients who do not end up delivering with him. I have a couple of friends who saw him throughout their antenatal care but went back to their home country to give birth and he treated them exactly the same as he treated patients that deliver with him
 
That's one reason why I loved Dr Chan - I always planned to deliver public - and throughout three pregnancies (one which ended in early miscarriage), I've seen MANY obgyns over here. He was the first one who really seemed to treat me exactly the same regardless. He was even very helpful with working WITH my public care, asking me about when my next appointments were so that we could get other test results back in time for me to take it to the public hospital etc...
 
I am about 9 weeks pregnant. I saw Dr Chan for my first appointment around 6 weeks. He seems nice. I'm also going to try out Grace Cheung before I settle on one or the other. From what I've heard, Dr Chan is a good doctor but has about 50% of his patients delivering by C-section. Grace Cheung and Lucy Lord have only a 30% rate of C-sections. I got this information from midwives who have worked with all these doctors closely. Perhaps this is of no consequence to some, but other than cost, this may be one other difference between the two doctors.
 
With Dr. Chan, you have to be very clear what your wishes are and not waffle and he'll deliver. I asked for a natural - insisted on it unless it was life-threatening. Also asked to walk away with 2 stitches.

I just delivered 6 days ago at the Matilda and he delivered! Natural birth with just a 1 cm tear.

The bill for Dr. Chan (only) during the stay was $23 500 as I was staying in 4 bedroom ward.
 
I just delivered with Dr Chan in Feb. I had a c-section but mostly cause I had one for my first (due to my own medical problems) and the probability of having a successful natural birth seemed too low for me to want to try. But I have to say though, Dr Chan never even brought up the topic of natural or c-section until I asked him beginning of my 3rd trimester. I think he assumed that I would be giving natural birth. I really didn't think he was trying to sway me one way or another. He merely gave me all the facts and statistics and said I had plenty of time to think about it more. Even when I did decide to go with a c-section, he still asked me again if I were sure, etc ... So even though his record seems to indicate that he pushes for c-sections, I really don't think that's the case.

I just wanna give you an update. When I read that Dr. Patrick Chan is still nice with patients that were to deliver later at public, I couldn't wait to meet him...
Thinking that he is unusual and not money oriented like most OB in HK. I look forward in meeting him.

I called to his office today to schedule my first appointment with him BUT after a few questions ( I still don't know if he got a slot for me), Im was told that Im not "qualified" to be his patient.

The receptionist didn't tell me that he is schedule was full. After some investigation, I learned why I got rejected... It was because I am NOT sure yet If I want Matilda and mostly because I mentioned QHM as a back up!

Well I'm disappointed for sure!
 
If that is the reason that you have been turned away then that is surprising. Dr Patrick Chan was one of the only OBs that I had heard of who still take public hospital patients. So if he has now taken this view, he is only doing what so many other private OBs are doing - eg: Lucy Lord and Grace Cheung to name two. Dr Cheung is so busy with private hospital patients that I understand she has had to turn away patients as she is fully booked up. I can understand why they would prefer to see a patient right through to delivery - although perhaps it is primarily for monetary reasons, I'd also like to believe their justifications that they cannot fully look after their patient if they have to let them go at the crucial stage as they can't help them deliver in a public hospital.

Perhaps someone on here can recommend another private OBs who takes public hospital patients.

I know that Dr Chan has a new receptionist on top of the 3 nurses (one nurse is a replacement). When I call to arrange a Gynae check up she doesn't seem too experience and always asking me to wait.

My guess he is really too busy that he had to cut down on public patients? Maybe some existing patients complain that the wait was too long as he said sorry to keep us waiting (I had wait way longer before honestly)

Anyway, I really hope he is not turning public patients away.
 
I was at his clinic this week and heard his nurse turning patients away cos he is not taking new patients till august.

Dr Chan is really nice.
It's probably a case of workload. He wasn't very popular (and relatively unknown) but obviously, this has changed with the lot of us singing him praises. No one I know who has seen him has anything bad to say about him. Unfortunately, once an OBGYN gets famous/popular, the waitlist grows and it's quite normal for them to start turning patients away.

A lot of popular OBGYNs at Matilda are also retiring, cutting their workload e.g. Dr. Ghosh, Dr Dawkins has retired... two years ago? So really, it was only a matter of time that Dr Chan started turning patients away.

I'm sorry you did though as he is the bees knees in my book.
 
Dr Chan delivered my 2nd baby and my husband and I absolutely adored him. We have been recommending him to all our friends who are looking for referrals. I just saw him yesterday for my regular check-up and asked him about his policy in regards to new patients since I did hear he wasn't taking on any. And he just said that he would like to take on new patients but unfortunately he just doesn't have enough time and didn't want to take away from his current patients. He wanted to make sure that he was still able to give his existing patients amble time and not have to rush through his appointments. It's really unfortunate cause he really is a wonderful doctor. I do know that you can still make appointments with him at his Matilda office hours as a new patient ...
 
Here's wat happened. I asked my husband to call the next day and NOT mentioned any back up OB or QMH. We got an appointment! And yes we are new patient and with no referral too!

Thank you for your feedback! It does help me since I'm not sure if I still want him to deliver my baby after I got screened out for saying tat I had qmh as back up... It made doubt him but thank you all your insight
