Toddler refusing to self feed, what to do?

Hi there,
My son is turning 18m old and he doesn't want to use the spoon at all. What can you do to encourage him to self feed?

My son was exactly the same; wanted to be fed all the time, no interest in feeding himself. This went on past 2 years old. Personally, I wouldn't worry too much as he will eventually (though if course I worried a little too at the time). I think children just do things at different paces.

One thing I did do was let him play with his food and handle it, just to get him feeding himself even if not with a spoon.

Then we'd feed him most of his meal, but get him to feed himself a few spoonfuls and gradually increase this over time.

He's obsessed with diggers and other construction vehicles so I bought him a plate and spoon / fork that were little diggers and let him play with those as he ate.

He's 2.5 now and still rarely eats a whole meal by himself, but he will do soon. To be honest, I'm not worried.

Thanks for the advice, I might try find a set of blue cutlery for him (his fav colour) and see if he will at least hold on to it. Good luck with yours!
