Toddler giving up naptime ?

Hi everyone,

Anyone else had this problem ? Naptimes have become a struggle lately with my 27 month old toddler. He resists going to bed at his regular time in the afternoon and some days goes to sleep completely exhausted late in the evening. Then bedtime gets messed up ! And other days he just doesn't sleep at all during the daytime and goes to bed early. Is he giving up his naptime altogether ? Or should I persist and put him to bed in the afternoons ?

Thanks

Sounds like he is going through a phase, and will probably click back into a daytime nap shortly.

I think they like to give it a try - going all day with no rest, but then they realise that having a sleep isn't such a bad idea.

At his age you should still be able to get one 2-3 hr nap daily.

I remember with my eldest I would just tell her she could lie on her bed for 10 mins with her eyes open, but she'd quickly fall asleep. Another thing I did was have a nap myself and let her sleep next to me.

I'd persist!

My son started to resisit afternoon naps from about 2.5 years old and I could not get him to shut his eyes or lie down. In the end I just let him be although I do try to make his bedtime a little earlier (like half an hour). I think as long as they do not get cranky from not napping then I guess they do not need it.

My son gave up afternoon naps when he was 11 month.(he is now 16 months)

But I would like to know, how you other mums define "afternoon". What time are we talking about?
Because Lukas had his afternoon nap at around 4pm. Now he sleeps in the morning (9/9.30 to 10/10.30) and after lunch (around 1/1.30 pm) for max 1.5 hrs. But after that he is awake until 7.30 pm, and he seems to be fine.
So I really think it depends on the child.

Armstroe...I've never managed to get my son to sleep longer than 1 or 1&1/2 hours. That's max. I wish he would sleep for 3 hours in the afternoon ;). Telling him to lie down and shut his eyes never worked either...he tells me he doesn't want to shut his eyes and then begins to jump on the bed. He just can't stay still. I try lying down with him too and he's very happy because now he has me to jump over too !!

Marta....My son's afternoon nap has been about 1:00-1:30 PM in the afternoon. He has his lunch by 12:00-12:30PM. I guess by afternoon naps most of us mean any nap taken during the day..before bedtime.

Well, thanks everyone for your replies. He slept over the weekend without a fuss. Hope it continues :)

Cheers
