The Real Deal With Cloth Diapers in Hong Kong?

FYI- read online somewhere there was a controversy over Charlie Banana copying Fuzzibunz's design. From what I saw, the story goes that Charlie Banana owner was manufacturing for Fuzzibunz for awhile and then the relationship spoiled and Charlie Banana company was born... Who knew cloth diapers were such a cut-throat business :P

Another question, what type of detergent is everyone using for their cloth diapers? In US they seem to have a bunch of special brands, but not sure what's available in Hong Kong that won't damage the diapers.

I'll be washing BumGenius and FuzziBunz...

I use Bubba Moo an Aussie brand (I have a few others but that is by far my favourite as they are 1 size fits all and have lasted from 3 months to 25 months so far, with great absorbency and minimal leaks) and they recommend washing without any detergent, then every month or so (or more frequently if smelly) do a strip wash using a few drops of dishwashing detergent. We also wash in cold water and only do the strip wash in hot. This is economical, environmentally friendly and the nappies are fine. I dry on a drying rack in the sun where possible (on balcony if dry or not too humid, in front of the window if not) as the UV makes a huge difference to both stains and smell and using the dryer is not good for absorbency or life of the nappies, especially the covers. I was concerned how i would go in HK as they were line dried outside in Australia in a very dry environment, but it has been fine. I dry pail them in between and wash every two days. I also use flushable and biodegradable nappy liners most of the time as this helps with minimises poo stains and having to scrape it off which is often not that easy!!!
 
The Bumps to Babes outlet in Ap Lei Chau sell special detergent and many types of diaper pails. Not sure if the detergent is specifically for cloth diapers, but I've been using it to wash baby's clothes and cloth diapers (flats) and it seems to work okay.
 
I bought washable diaper pail liners by Planet Wise on amazon and I plan to use it with a regular step trash can like Simple Human. You can wash the liner along with each load of diapers. Saves on cost and less plastic waste!

I found a Tippytoes diaper pail at Bumps2Babes in Ap Lei Chau. It's white in colour (that's the only colour they had in stock at the time) and comes with a lid which I hope will minimise smells!

Ozmerc, it's encouraging to hear that you're happy with the CB diapers. I also bought the one-size diapers. Are you using cloth diapers exclusively? How many CB diapers do you go through a day for a newborn?

As I've said, I've not yet had a chance to try mine out yet because the baby has yet to arrive. However, I've already run them through the cold water wash and have found that the diaper shells dry very quickly on the washing line. The liners take a little longer to dry. Do you use a dryer or line dry?
 
I just read up on the fuzzibunz vs Charlie Banana drama. FB owner has made a huge retraction and vehemently denies CB stole their product. They had a parting of ways but it seems it was a business dispute, not intellectual theft. Quite easy to find the information if you google it. Now I know why I was able to buy so many hugely discounted fuzzibunz last year! I have to say I personally have worked with Gaelle as a product tester when she was with fuzzinbbunz and she absolutely backed the product up when there were issues. I am sure that her customer service would be even better with her own brand, though I have not ey had the chance to use CB diapers.
 
i just bought a fairly large bucket with a lid from a hardware-type stall in a wet market - cost less than $100, if i remember correctly. it doesn't really matter what you use, so long as it's big enough to hold two days' worth of nappies, & has a lid.

^lalligirl, I had in mind to do the exact same thing, but I couldn't find a hardware store that sold buckets with lids.
 
Check out GroVia, it looks like it's a very nice cloth diaper. It's recommended by my friend who is using it now. The Hybrid version comes in 2 pieces, one is the shell with a snap in soaker pad (can used either organic cotton soaker pad or disposable). When changing your baby, you don't always need to change the shell, may be 1 shell goes with 2 to 3 soaker pad change. At least this well save some space to hang out the shell. I like the fact that it's made with organic cotton too. My friend like the Hybrid version, but I kind of like the AIO ... lazy to do the snapping, just 1 piece and that's all. :P

They even have the newborn AIO now, look so cute!!! :) At least the newborn baby don't need to wear a big diaper ... ;)

I searched the web and saw quite a good number of retailers carrying this one. I even found them on Facebook. Lots of cute pictures ...

I tried Fuzzi Bunz with my first child few years back and was very disappointed. There are mainly 2 issues that I have, 1) it leaked so bad, even with 1 wee, he was all wet (he was a very active boy and the insert never stay where it's supposed to be and didn't catch the wee very well) ... This happened more than 1/2 of the times. 2) the insert stink so badly after sometimes, you can smell him from far (found out that the insert which is made of polyester will become stinky after awhile ... Problem with polyester). So, we gave up after 9 long months with the Fuzzi Bunz.

That's why I am at constant lookout for a better option for my DD, don't want the same issues that we had before. I did picked up some GroVia hybrid (highly recommended by my friend) and also the GroVia AIO, I would have to say that it's such a great cloth diaper, wish that we have used this one for my first child. Overall (after just a few weeks), I am very happy with both version, absorbed very well, NO STINKY diaper, and NO leaking so far (finger crossed) ... oh! And I love the fact that it worked so well at night too, I used the AIO for her night time and nap time too :p. We just love it!
