Telling your employer

Hi,

Can anyone advise on the legal position here in HK about telling employers you are pregnant?

I have never been given an employee handbook, so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I believe you have to get a letter from your OB/gyn stating that you are x months pregnant. Just ask from your ob/gyn. It's pretty much a "form" letter. You then give a copy of the same to your boss and the HR (to be put in your file). At least this was what I did.

The obligation is for you to give your employer your due date for the calculation of maternity leave. You can check the labour departments website - read the FAQs which translate the employment ordinance into plain English quite well.
Good luck!

however, waiting means you are not protected as a pregnant employee until you inform them officially. protection means they must pay you sick leave if related to your pregnancy and they can't fire you. as well as give 10 weeks paid leave at 80% 0f salary. more details can be found in the ordinance.

i would inform asap and ask for discretion from informing rest of office until after 1st trimester.
