tavelling with a 9 month baby

This summer, my son will be 9 months and I plan to take him to Canada on a 14 hour flight with 1 connection on Cathay by myself. Does anyone have any experience? Should I get him his own seat? Will they provide a 'car seat'? Can he sleep in his stroller? Should I give him medication to make him sleep thru it? Will the hot water for his formula be clean? What should I bring on board? Thanks for your advice.

Hi, Gini

I was a stewardess with SQ for 5 years, and now i travel alot with my 6 months baby back to my home town. There is no need to get him a sit by himself. Bassinet is provided throughout the flight unless turbulence u will need to remove your baby for safety reasons. If you really want a seat by himself then you can use your car seat. But from my experience, very seldom i see mum travelling with car seat becoz it's too bulky and troublesome especially you're traveling alone. Hot water on board is absolutely safe for baby.On long haul flight baby jar food will be offered. Some basic amenities like diapers, diaper cream, bibs will be offered too. If the stewardess did not offer you, feel free to request for it anytime u want. There's ample on board.

Do bring some extra diapers, feeding bottles and formula. That's all u need. No need to give him medication to make him sleep. Because of the pressure on board , baby will fall asleep easily. Feed him any kind of liquid during take off and upon descending to clear the pressure in his ears. U cannot bring stroller on board but don't worry, u can request the stroller to be at arrowbridge right upon arrival. That way u won't need to carry the baby walking around the airport collecting luggages.

If u have further question feel free to post it here. I'll be glad to share my experiences.Hope you'll have a pleasant and safe flight back home to Canada. Cheers!

I don't know specifically about Cathay, but in general, I always bring my son's formula including water, enough for 2 days in case anything should happen to the luggage, same with diapers and clothes. . . this makes for very bulky carry-on I know, but for long-distance travel, I try to plan on what-ifs. If possible, also bring a spare set of clothes for you, in case flying doesn't agree with baby (this I found out the hard way!). I don't believe airlines provide car seats or would allow you to let baby sleep in the stroller. If you travel with baby as a lap child, try to request the bassinet so that your baby can lay down (subject to availability & baby length & weight). I have heard of parents medicating the child, I personally don't believe in it. The rule of thumb to alleviate the ear ache of take off & landing is to allow baby to suck on something, bottle, pacifier, etc. I now allow my son to chew some food, crackers/cheese, to get his jaws & saliva working to relieve any built up pressure. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Oh yes i forgot to mention that baby wipes will be offered too but it's better if u could bring some extra yourself. There will be a baby changing table in 1 or 2 of the lavatories on board. Try to ask the stewardess the toilet location. On long haul flight toilet is long queue, better to know the right lavatory to go in.

Cheers.

Hi,
I had been to Canada, States and other Asian countries travelling with my 2 1/2 old son (he was 22 mths when we went to Can) My tips are:-
1) Bring some old(his favourites) and new toys to keep him occupied.
2)Feed him liquids when takeoffs or landing.(but my son didn't need one though)
3) Bring extra diapers, wipes and formulas just in case of luggage or flight delay.
4) Bring some medicine just in case he feels sick(but not to DRUG the baby)
5) Bring extra clothes of the baby and for you as well.
6) Expect the worst scenarios that would have happened like screaming or something and you will feel a better journey if he doesn't do that.
Don't panic and it is gonna to be okay.. I love to travel with my son..

If traveling by CX i think it will be better to get a seat for your son because CX bassinets are smaller than Singapore airlines and also CX doesnt get preference for babies older than 9 months.

Extra pair of clothes atleast 2 pairs.
