Taking helper with us on family vacation

We are thinking of doing this for the first time. Is there anyone out there who has done it and has any thoughts or recommendations? Also, what is the protocol if the helper accompanies a family on a vacation that overlaps with a public holiday that she would normally have off?

We pay ours for her supposed day off, but you can also give her another day off later, just ask her which she prefers.
