Swimming Lessons

I want to enroll my 7 month old son in swimming lessons. I don't think I want to do private lessons due to cost and bc I would like to meet other moms. I have heard good thinks about the Australian international school program but unfortunately the lessons for babies are held on the weekends. I would prefer to do weekday classes as I am a stay at home mom and desperately looking for daytime activities.
Any ideas?

How about Harry Wright? We have been swimming with them since my daughter was 8 months old and she still loves it.

I have heard of Harry wright in Happy Valley, and have been wanting to send my 7 mons daughter there. However, the location is too far for us to travel there. (We are in Shatin).

Wondering do they actually teach/guide the baby to swim or having fun (playing) in the pool?

I would reconsider if purpose to teach '' how to swim'' rather than getting used in the water. Pls correct me If I am wrong, I thought I could do it myself If I just wanna let the baby getting used to the water.

Thank you. :flower:

Harry Wright conducts classes in various locations (Country Club, AMC, West Island School, Canadian Intl to name a few). You can check out the locations and schedules on their website.

It's not just play, tho at a young age, at the Parent & Infant class your child is swimming with assistance, so dont expect the child to really swim :) the classes are structured so you will 'learn' forward crawl, dipping the head under water, dip head/swim unassisted for a feet, jump off the pool, dive and pick up things from the bottom of the pool etc as you progress ... In addition to just getting the child comfortable with water. Nothing a parent cannot teach the child, but I know I probably cannot do it as well, most of the time we take her swimming we end up playing instead. I may even have introduced the float ....

I don't think that a child can really "swim" until they are closer to 3. My daughter is nearly 3 and she is JUST getting it. She still needs floaties to be really safe in the pool (if I'm not holding her) but she's getting close to swimming without them now. She's been doing lessons with Harry Wright since she was about 10 months. It really is about building water confidence, and getting used to the motions of swimming (helping them to kick and move their arms). I still think it's worth it though and I'm a big Harry Wright fan, personally.

Thanks so much for the help. Harry Wright looks great. Does anyone know if WIS is accessible by public transport? We are coming from Kowloon Station and I have a feeling it may be tough to get to:(

Hi MarisaB, we live in Kowloon Station too :) The closest to us will be WIS.

WIS is in Pokfulam, and quick to get to by car. I am not sure about public transport, but given it's a school, there should be public transport available.

We started at WIS but found the place a little hot, dark and stuffy, and have since moved to CDNIS which is further away. We love CDNIS, despite it being further away at Aberdeen (25 minutes drive by car).

Separately, if you are living in Kowloon West, you should be able to find swimming classes conducted in your residential complex as well ....

Harry Wright is great but it has 2 drawbacks.
(1) its one of the most expensive in town (you can find lower end private lessons for same price)
and
(2) its damn inconvenient for a lot of people.
I could not imagine travelling out to PFL or Aberdeen or CDNIS from Kowloon/Shatin just for swimming lessons when there are so many local choices.
If you are living far away, by the time you add all the expenses of travel, you may as well get a private teacher.

Swimming is very popular in Hong Kong starting from babies all the way to Adulthood. There are also many swimming clubs around town. I would suggest save yourself some money (most are less than 1/2 price of HW) and a lot of travelling time&expense; find something local.

Easiest ways to do that would be to go down to your closest public swimming pool :

If you go there on a Saturday morning or afternoon, you will see many kids and adults being coached. Usually they will also be wearing different colored caps showing emblems of the different clubs. Just approach the coaches and ask them for a brochure.

We live on HK Island and we have used both of these:

Dont be intimated by language if you dont speak Cantonese. Most if not all the teachers can speak passable English; good enough for swimming instruction.

Thank you for suggesting the alternative :D

Wow! Such great feedback, l really appreciate it.
I have checked out the Y and am waiting for a response. I will look into the public pools.
I stay g away from private lessons because I wanted to meet other moms and kids but I may have to go that route if nothing else works out.
Thanks again. Huge help!

Yup that's correct. For young children, its better to be in a group class than individual private lesson :)

Lowest will have to be Stanford - $98/class. I enrolled my little guy 1 summer to learn the breast stroke and by the end of the summer he had mastered it.
