Swimming diapers

Now my little darling is walking we are introducing her to the joys of swimming. I had seen reports here of special diapers but actually finding any proved unsuccessful. The first trip last week just showed how unsatisfactory normals are, even with plastic pants over.

Today in Shatin we found great range in ToysRUs .. go figure! Huggies Little Swimmers , 3 sizes in the range @30bucks for a packet of 3. So now its going to be a lot easier to get this sort of stuff it would seem if they are stocking HK wide.

Off to the pool later today to try them out.

If you are going to take your LO swimming a lot over the summer, it might be more economical to buy a fabric swim diaper as it is reuseable.

Boris, Huggies Little Swimmers are available quite widely and easily. Have been getting them for 1 year + now. Glad you found them too.

Agree re using reuseables. Not just cheaper in the long run but better for the environment too. Bumps 2 Babes have reasonable priced ones - about $90.

We have been using Huggies Little Swimmers since she started swimiing at 6y months (now 2 years old), has anyone tried out those washable reusable swimming diaper? Thinking of getting one of those instead. Do you wear them underneath the swim suit just like the Huggies?

Really? I have seen those for around 150HKD, and was really wondering if they worth it, as it is mostly going to last for 1 season only. The Huggies Little Swimmers can be found for around 28 bucks on Park'nShop, and probably even cheaper on local drug stores... But even for 30 HKD the packet of 3, that makes it 10HKD each diapers. For 150 (the cost of a reusable one) I could get 15 disposable ones... I am probably not going to take my baby to swim for 15 times for the remaining of this summer......

... but for 90 bucks, I may consider getting a reusable one.

Charlie Banana ( a HK based brand actually) has very reasonably priced reusable swim diapers - $79 - that's as good as any of the other brands that retail for twice as much eg like bambino mio.
You can find them at 360 and at Jason's Marketplace. I have used mine at least twice a week and still looks good as new. Def more environmentally friendly than disposables.

I use the fabric swim diapers and they work just fine. The baby wears it under his swimsuit. Don't know how the disposables work as I've never tried them, but the fabric ones hold in solids and let liquids through! The Kushies swim diaper is very inexpensive, although a little fiddly to get on a wriggling baby as you have to do up two velcro tabs and then tie in front. The Iplay swimming diaper is super easy to use and I think worth the extra money. There are many brands and prices to choose from, but most are between $90-175.

Also, at Mothercare, I saw swimsuits where the swim diaper was actually built into the swimsuit. They looked easy to use too, although I'm not sure how the price compares to buying a separate swimsuit and swim diaper.

Widely available ???
Not where we live. Island South? That's a holiday destination for us!

PnS in Tai Po ( a REAL big one ) doesn't do them ( or the MTR and market outlets), Wellcome never seen and I haven't seen them in my time when we lived in Kennedy in either brands of shop (even in Belchers). Maybe very selective outlets. Taste - our nearest is Kowloon Tong so not practical. Hence my intense happiness in finding them in some place really accessible.

As for the reusable - my wife is Mainland Chinese so NO WAY she would even consider reusing something that has been 1 and 2'd. This is a woman who thinks walking on grass is "going green".

Off out to the pool now to test them out.

we have been using disposible swimmers for our son from our first trip to bangkok when he was 5-mths, and now for summer swims at 9-mth. we use a Japanese brand where you can get in packs of 3 @ $29 at bonjour or any baby stores that carry Japanese products. it's like the pull ups which work really well and we love it!

Gataloca - yes the brand I bought from B2B was $90. Can't remember the name but only got it last week at the Central one. They are on the end of the first row of shelves opposite end to the toys. There are two styles - one which is like underwear with an elasticated waist (more expensive) and the one I chose which is like a nappy - does up with velcro and has a tie waist also. I've used this brand for my oldest child and works well. Now buying for my younger child. They had both girl and boy colours. And did seem good value at $90.

No swim nappy (reuseable or disposable) is going to hold wees but is there to catch #2!

I always used a pocket cloth nappy without the insert. Mostly I used a bumgenius without the insert, since they get ratty so quickly anyway I didn't mind them being in chlorine so often. You could use a fuzzi bunz or any pocket dipe really. Easy.

Baby Central sells swim diapers (both disposable or reuseable) online:

As well as getting the Huggies disposables in our local (Parkview) PnS (or Fusion as it now likes to style itself!), I've also found them in branches of Escapade (eg, Causeway Bay, Cricket Club, Football Club, Parkview Club).

Huggies disposables are also sold at Toys r Us but only in the summertime. I used those for ages before buying the reusables. It may or may not be worth it, depending on how often you go swimming.

Yes my LO uses Charlie Banana as well - so far no "accidents" have ever occured. Used Huggies before too, and was satisfied with it, but felt that reuseable ones are more environmentally friendly!

Just curious - when did others who take baby swimming start doing this? My first was born in winter and then came to the HK winter so for the first year swimming really didn't occur. My second was born this summer and up until now we would swim 3-4 times a week at our nearby hotel swimming pool. But I'm not sure when it is appropriate to take baby in? The water is usually about 32 C so it's not cold. Right now she is only just over a week old so it's not happening yet, but I'm wondering for future reference?

You can take them in at any time. My first born was born in October when it was getting cold already, but we were back in Australia for Christmas and she loved swimming at 2 months old. My 2nd born didn't swim until she was about 6-7 months though. Some babies have sensitive skin so just make sure first that they don't react to the chlorine (maybe dip their toes in but don't take them swimming the first time) - and also you need to be EXTRA cautious about sunburn with babies as well - and also just watch that they don't get too cold... but there's no reason why you can't take them swimming at a young age, provided you take all the necessary precautions :)
