Just checked with the supermarkets around and all are out of stock for Salt. Reason: People have started stocking up fearing that it might be contaminated with the nuclear radiations from Japan in the future.

Same goes for jp milk powder. And soon other jp products, no doubt. Classic hysteria.
It's funny that people don't have a problem eating fish from hk and Chinese waters. Hm.

just had a conversation with my local hubby,

"hubby, did you know that there is no salt or soy sauce left in the supermarkets? hk people think they can use it to protect themselves from radiation."

"hk people are idiots!" so says my hk hubby...

Thanks cara.. i forgot to mention the soy sauce in my thread.... Even that was missing from the supermarket shelves .
Tha same is the case in china also, esp in Gaungdong region. No salt, no soy sauce. A few shops that have them are selling them for 60-70 RMB for every small packet.

Ho... so now I understand why there was a couple filling their trolley with 10 soya sauce bottles !! hope the consumption date is in 2013 !!

Saw a construction worker in my local park n shop purchase 25 bags of salt and the cashier didn't even bat an eyelid.... Actually I'm surprised they had that many on the shelf!

truly ridiculous..... maybe we could start something about fishballs, then they could clear the shelves of those and make room for some decent food....

I blogged about it here and made a cute little graph to make it a little easier to understand. I'm off this morning to check on the seaweed supplies as I suspect that will be the next panic-induced shopping rush.

They mentioned this on the Pearl news last night. Basically due to mass panic on the mainland about winds blowing radiation over this way, they are buying iodinized salt to protect themselves, which is supposed to help prevent radiation sickness. So there you go. Hkers have followed suit. Now, I don't know how soy sauce fits in. Good thing I have an extra bottle in my cupboard. Oh no, wait, it's Japanese soy sauce. We're doomed!

What I think is funny is that a lot of people don't even KNOW why they are buying all the salt. I saw on the news they interviewed a bunch of people and they all gave different reasons as to why they "HAD" to buy it. Crazy.

I read that much of it is mainland "dealers" buying tons of salt to resell over the border, same as they do for baby powder.
For what it's worth, the 360 at Elements, Kowloon Station, has plenty of salt. I was just there.

Sigh. You'd have to eat SO MUCH salt to equal one iodine tablet that you'd die of dehydration or hypertension before any radiation could get to you.
