Strollers

My husband and I have been out and about this weekend looking for strollers suitable for Hong Kongs busy roads, for when to the baby is born. However everything we saw, especially the new travel systems, weighed a ton. They just seem too large and bulky.

Any ideas on a good lightweight stoller for a new born, or do you think we should hold off on the stroller untill the baby is a little older and just use a car seat in the mean time?

I have also heard from a friend in the States of a new system called the Snap'N Go, which is basically just a stroller without a seat with wheel. So all you do is add any car seat to this wheel stoller. Its supposed to be light and practical. Anyone seen any around in H.K ?

If you don't have a car then I would skip the whole travel system. It really is bulky. But I did notice that Wing On are selling some Combi models that are a bit more compact than the Graco and Preg P.

You can get by with a Baby Bjorn and carseat for the first few months. We only started using a stroller when D was around 5 months. I got a light weight Combi which I just love! It weighs only 3.5kgs. And the Combi after sales support is excellent. I snapped the guardrail and they replaced it for me at no charge.

The Snap and Go is also great. A friend of mine had one and its so convenient. Not sure if its available here.

Manten strollers

I was very pleased with the Manten brand of strollers. You can get them in Sincere, Uny, Wing On and other department stores, maybe even CRC or Yue Wah. They are fairly light weight and easy to fold and youcan tip them slightly with baby inside them to fit under the turnstiles of the MTR.

They're not for babies under the age of 3 months or so, but that's OK, because under that age it's easier just to put the BB in a sling or baby carrier (IMHO).

The major disdvantage of the Manten brands is that if you are over 5 foot 5 inches tall, you might find them a bit "short" to push comfrtably. But, they were fine for my husband and me.
 
Stroller with carseat for 0-9 mth and above

We loved our stroller set which keeps my baby safe even for long bus trip. It keeps him in a good position for sleeping, laying and sitting. The carseat with head support protects him very well, especially for his neck. I enjoy and managed to take him to the park on my own with the stroller.

the only thing is, you'll probably find it bulky when your baby reaches nine months, like mine now. By then, you'll want another lightweight one, like me now.

May be, Reema, you can consider our set if you don't mind second hand. It worths 4K. We keep it clean and looks new. May be 1K+ for the whole set plus head support and a good toy
you'll amaze how he'll start to pull the toy.

Whether you'll take our set or get a new one, i won't recommand a 0-8 mths in a traditional stroller, since I saw many babies laying or sitting in a position that makes me worry

Also, the carseat can be a rocking chair and a feeding chair
(although we hardly feed him there since we got another swing for feeding)

If your baby is a newborn have you considered using a sling instead of a stroller? I found that I was much happier with my babies held high up and not at car exhaust height. While they were young, least than a year, it was no problem carrying them about.

I will admit that I had some persuading to do when I finally decided to use a stroller but once they realized it was a choice between walking and the stroller rather than being carried and the stroller they were happy to sit in it.

With each of my four children I used a different type of sling but the type I was happiest with was an over the shoulder type. These allow you to use from newborn (I brought my last two babies home from the hospital in one) up to thirty pounds. You can also use them in many different holds and, of course, are super discreet for breastfeeding.
