Strollers and Travelling

We are going to take our almost 7 month old for a trip to Japan next month. We have an Orbit stroller, which is big like the Bugaboo Chameleon, and uses a car seat as the seat right now. The car seat detaches from the stroller...was wondering if other mums who have travelled with their baby's stroller have just pushed the stroller up to the gate and checked the stroller in at the gate? I'm always worried that when I check-in the stroller w/car seat at the gate it will get thrown around and ruined. What are other mums' experience with this? Thanks!

We just pushed it to the gate and handed it over to the flight attendants. They gave it back to us at the gate again after landing. We took dragonair, and they did a good job by wrapping up the folded stroller with a big plastic bag before they put it away.

yep, with cathay you just tell them at check-in that your stroller will be a gate check-in. they will put a tag on it with your flight number etc...when you arrive at your gate the flight attendant will tell you where to leave it. make sure all things that might get detached in transit are off etc....when we are traveling on airplanes, we take off all toys etc..ahead of time for easy opening and closing. we only had a plastic bag wrapped around it once for our long flight back to the states, but we don't mind as our MacLaren Techno is pretty tough and great for traveling. we've never had any problems. our stroller is always ready for us once we leave the airplane. at most, we've had to wait 10 minutes for them to bring up all the strollers;)

My son is 14 months and has been on 14 flights. When checking in, let them know that your stroller is 2 pieces so that they place one luggage tag on each piece (one on the frame and the other on the car seat). Have a great flight =)

Can we request that the airline cover it in a big plastic bag? I'm a bit wary about them just throwing my stroller and car seat uncovered into the baggage hold...doesn't it get really dirty? Thanks all for your advice!

hi FutureHKmom,
My post is a bit not related to your question. But I saw you mention that you have a Orbit stroller, so, I wanted to ask you about it.

We brought the whole Orbit travel system--toddler seat, car seat and bassinet. It looks like your car seat still fits in your 7 months old.

My Son is 4.5 month now and he refuses to sit in the car seat. Did you take you some time to get your baby to be in comfortable in the car seat. We thought it was such a waste since we've never used it.

As said, on our flight with dragonair they cover the stroller with a big plastic bag without us asking it, so it's kept quite clean and safe.

we had a protective cover specifically for carseats that we bought at Babies R Us in the US, but I am sure they have them somewhere in HK.

for cx, they offer the plastic to cover up my stroller from hong kong to malaysia, but they didn't offer from malaysia back to hong kong, so keep the plastic bag for the returning flight. also, not sure if every airlines offer or is it just cx. you might wanna bring some wet antiseptic towels, to wipe the stroller when they return it to you.

I also have the orbit and when my son still used the infant carseat it was great, we rolled it up to the gate, detached the carseat and put it in a plastic bag (i would bring my own garbage bag, just in case the airline didn't provide one) and folded up the frame and detached the pod - which we used as our diaper bag.

Cathay will give you plastic bags, and I think so will ANA. not sure about other airlines, but if you are concerned, just shove a couple of large trash bags into the pod.

have fun.

Thanks all for your replies!

Kmalia - when you folded up the frame, did you also bring a garbage bag to put it in or did Cathay put it in one of their plastic bags?

Carey - We've had our son sit in his car seat from the day he came out of the hospital! He hated it for the first week or two and would cry whenever we put him in it. But after that, he has had no big problems. Though sometimes, when we are out to dinner if he has been sitting in it for too long, he'll want to come out to look around. I've also noticed that he gets really fussy in the car seat when he gets too hot. The material that the car seat is made out of makes him really hot. Hopefully with the cooler weather now, it should be better. At 7 months he still fits in it. Though he is only an average size baby - probably around 16.5 pounds now. We've just recently taken out the toddler seat and put him in it to try. He fits in the toddler seat now, but looks quite small in it. One other very important thing - have toys attached to the car seat! We never leave home now without at least two toys attached on either side of his car seat. Plus I have to carry small toys in the diaper bag to give to him when he gets bored. :)

I recommend getting a stroller bag, too. We bought a stroller bag at B2B, which has been absolutely brilliant. Our stroller has done many, many flights and is still in reasonable condition, but I cannot say that for the stroller bag (so assume that the stroller by itself would get knocked around as much as the bag)!!!
