stroller in the taxi trunk

when i came home tonight in a taxi, the taxi driver charged me for putting the baby stroller in the trunk!! i was never charged for putting the stroller in the trunk before. this is ridiculous.

i heard from another taxi driver that strollers, like wheelchairs, will not be charged. and that is not at the discretion of the taxi driver, it's the rule.

has anyone have the same experience before? or does anyone know anything about it?

We were just charged 2 days ago, I think it was about $5. I also thought it was BS, but then again, HK is a bit like that - all regulated and anal sometimes. So I didn`t question it. But it would be nice to know if it`s legit or not.

I think that the cab drivers CAN charge you for it, but MOST don't... if you read the signs in the cabs, it doesn't mention that strollers are free like a wheelchair is - but most don't charge. I've had a couple charge - it drives me crazy, I think it SHOULD be free too - but it's not a "rule" that it's free, it's just that most allow it anyways...

That's my understanding anyway...

I've always been charged for putting a stroller in the trunk. I've never heard that I shouldn't be charged for it. That little yellow sticker on the inside of the cab has no mention of strollers/prams etc, so I would expect to be charged.

I've only been charged once. But I gave him a dirty look in return, that I would consider outside the constraints of what is socially acceptable that made the $5 all worth it. HK is becoming more baby friendly though...stickers in the MTR and better consideration at lifts..take heart, it wont be long now.

actuallty they are not suppose to. my husband complained and he said if u want we will not charge. so now if they want to charge all i say i read their license no a lot and tell them i will complain and they dont

I've been charged once too. I was none too impressed with it.
Most of the drivers I come across don't charge for the stroller.
I think i'll be using Neha's tactic if I get charged again. :)

i travel twice today in taxi and no charge! I asked a taxo driver before regarding stroller charge. He said if we have a baby and a stroller then it is free but if it is just a stroller and put in the truck, then the will charge and counted it as a piece of suitcase or something like this. Oh, both trips on taxi the drivers were extremely nice and helpful, what a day!!

You're right... it is only $5, but it is the principle of accessibility as a charge that is an issue for me. A child using a stroller is using one because they NEED to most of the time. I am sure other mums out there like myself can't wait to no longer have to lug a stroller with me almost everywhere we go around HK.

I tip taxi drivers a lot of the time for their service and efficiency (I've been purposely driven 'the long way around' several times... but that's another thread in itself). I won't tip if they charge me for my stroller.... they've already taken the courtesy I would give them greedily for themselves by preying on the fact I can't get around without the stroller.

guys, its only five bucks.

I'm going to agree. Given that my cab driver lives in an apartment the size of a shoebox. His has a 200 sq ft apartment shared with 4 other family members in the "slums" of Tin Shui Wai. And, he has to make at least $1000 a day just to break even, if he charges me an extra $5, I'm not going to fuss when my salary is WAY more than his.

I know it's a matter of principal but sometimes, we forget how hard some of them have it and making it worse for them under the economic climate (coz their incomes have shrunk). I know that they've had a fare hike but really, how many cab drivers do we know are "living it up" like we are? Most are primary bread winners.

We've been in situations where we've been billed and no, we don't make a fuss. Given the exchange rate, it's just AUD1.

I'm gonna support kiwiinoz. I've never been charged for my stroller and am surprised to know now that they can do that. Like kiwiinoz said, we always tip taxi drivers. And we feel happy when rewarding someone for a job well done. However, I'd be quite annoyed when being forced to pay even as little as 5 dollars, as I believe some allowance/consideration should be made to parents who have a special need to carry their stroller around. We can easily apply the same treatment that airlines do on our stroller and they even give an extra allowance---a bag of baby nappies/food for free!

Yes I agree $5 is nothing, but principle is everything.

Yeah...I can see it wasn't clearly spelled out. What a shame!!! I think it really should add stroller to the list! Or should we just consider that as part of the cost of raising kids, ey?
