dear all, my son who is now nearly 3.5 months old is passing stools only once every three to four days. when he was on bm (with formula supplement two meals a day) he was passing stools at least twice a day. he's now on formula only and his stools, though soft, is greenish.
is there anything i could give him to enable him to have more frequent bowel movements?
grateful if anyone can give me some advice on this. thanks very much.

Usually babies do poo less often once they're on formula.

Maybe you can dilute the formula - say instead of 6 scoops for 180 ml, you make 5 scoops + 180 ml water or 6 scoops + 200 ml water.

I was told to do this by my paedi.

Hope this helps!

greenish stool (it's prob a mix of green and mustard colour) for formula fed babies is normal. As long as it is not hard and you did mention that it's soft so that's fine.

Formula fed babies should pass stools at least once every 2 days. Any less frequent, you better consult your paed.

On top of formula milk, try giving your baby water, or even diluted prune juice - 1 part prune juice to 5 parts cooled boiled water...it has to be very mild for young babies.

hi,
would strongly advise that you start introducing water, not only will it be good for his constipation problem but it will also get him into a habit of taking water, esp when he starts solids at about 5-6 months AND when he has a temperature from flus/colds/jabs etc....

good luck!

thanks sumei.
we started giving him at least 3 oz of water a day a week ago and definitely see improvements in his stools this past two days. water does help!
thanks again.

arkcocoon,
my ped said the amt of water a baby can take corresponds to his/her age ; 1 mth - 1 oz, 2 mth - 2 oz, etc. so i guess 3 oz per day for yours will do.

Would also suggest you test him for allergy to formula/ cow's milk.

My son was allergic to goat's milk. When he had goat's milk at 18 mths, he pooed once every 4 days. He was drinking 18 oz of water per day. I gave him prune juice, he pooed every other day. But by introducing too much fibre, it overloaded his digestive system and he did not sleep well.

When I got him off goat's milk, within 3 days, he pooed everyday.

maybe a good idea to test allergy too to avoid overloading digestive system

my boy is 3.5 months, and totally breastfeed,he only poohs once every 3 to 4 days.. got him to check , and the doctor said is just he's lazy to pooh...

so he has his own style...
