stocking up on essentials - anything apart from nappies?

Dear all,
We are hoping to move to Hong Kong in the Summer with a 6 month old (- He'll be 9 months by the time we move) from the UK. We wondered if there is anything worthwhile stocking up on. (Company will be relocating us.)

I have heard nappies (esp Pampers very expensive) - Wondered about Aptamil Formula and also Hipp Organics and Organic baby products.

What are your collective thoughts?

I had a quick look at ebay hk but couldnt see that much - maybe bad timing - what do you all think?

Would really appreciate your moving tips!

Hi Shahira,

Don't panic. Things are not that expensive here although I have noticed that the quality of the diapers in HK is not as good the ones overseas (eg. UK, Australia, US) - it's thinner compared to the overseas counterparts, but it still does a reasonable job at the end of the day. I buy the expensive one but it's on average about HKD100 for a pack of 54 diapers (I believe the exchange rate is roughly 1 Pound for HKD 13). Anyway, by the time you get here in the summer your little one won't go through so many diapers a day.

I believe Hipp Organics is available here and there are other organic baby food/products.

It's not a bad idea to stock up anyway if the company if paying for it.

snap! how to cope with jetlag/routine

I am also moving to HK from London in the summer with a 9-month old!! We are actually going out next week though for 6 weeks so I will be able to do a bit of recon before going permanently.

I'm a bit conernced about the change in routine with the time difference though....I'm not sure whether to just change to new time or do it gradually as far as feedtimes are concerned! Think I will post a new post for this also.

I can let you know Shahira what things aren't available in HK (or are more expensive) in a couple of weeks if you let me know your email address.

I am also moving to HK in July from Yorkshire, with a one yr old. I have never been to HK and won't get to go until we leave for good. (gulp) Any information will be gratefully received, especially regarding baby stuff!

Where are you going to be living? We are thinking of Mid-levels or Pokfulam. My hubby is currently in HK for a week and should be meeting some estate agents and looking at apartments.

We are going to bring quite a lot with us (as the company is paying!!) but are unsure about bringing furniture - what if the sofa won't fit through the door of new home?

months later - well, we are settled in Repulse Bay now and would love to meet up with you! Adam is now 13 months old! Still trying to locate organic formula. Anyone any ideas????

Hi. Have only just checked this thread again, and remembered that i had posted all that time ago.

We have now been here for almost 2 months and just getting settled in Pok fu lam.

Would love to meet for playdate/coffee if you are free at some point.
