Spit Up and Sleeping Positions

Hi Moms,

Got a problem that is driving me crazy. My dd is 6 weeks old and spits up A LOT. The problem is that after feeding her, I can't put her down for fear that she will just spit up and possibly choke. During the day I manage to sit her up or hold her for awhile until it seems okay but at night time, it is really hard because I want to get her to go right back to sleep. She spits up anywhere from right after the feed until even 1-2 hours later. My nights are miserable because I end up having to hold her for quite awhile or take her to bed with me so that I can get some sleep, while holding her at an angle in my arms.

Any advice or suggestions? I am willing to try anything!

Thanks a lot.

She probably has reflux like my son. Take hre to see PD if you are worried and not mind using any medicine but for me, I hold him for a while and put him on the nursing pillow for an hour or two. It looks like he leaning against the rubber band ( if you see what I mean). He will carry on doing that until 4, 5,6 or sometime 9 months. My son is slightly better at 4 months. They are fine with it but we have to learn to live with it.
Now I put my son face down (god forbid...but wait) on that nursing pillow so his face is a little beyond the top of the pillow so he can stil breath. He sleeps like that since 2 monthsduring the day. At night I jsut have to let him spit up as he wish. I notice that when he spit up by himself he tends to turn his head side way. So sometime I put him on his side (right side) so he won't put any pressure on his stomach.

I also put a pillow under his cot so the head of his bed is slightly higher than the foot of the bed. That way he won't choke so I'm told.

My son had the same problem, plus he was choking and suffocating at night. I've put the extra pillow too, but also took him to see an osteopath. Reflux can happen because of the conditions of the delivery, some tension appearing at the base of the head, pulling the stomach muscles. After 3 sessions, everything stopped.... I just hoped I did it before !
Good luck !

I heard about that too.

Who did you go to see. I'm interested.

And how much per session?

I went at IMI (16 Stanley Street) tel 2523 7121. I saw Dr Chan, a young lady, very sweet. The fees were 600$ per session... it's worth it.

Adahc, Did you give your son medicine for the reflux? And did it help?

Frenchy, What kind of treatments did the osteopath do?

Well... I'm not a pro, so I just could say that she was doing gentle pressure in the back of the crane, also on the head (the bones are not attached yet and easy to move), in order to release the muscles at the base of the head, and also on his diaphragm.
It seems like she was doing nothing, but I could see my son was getting tired, and it's better not to do everything in only one session as it's a lot of changes in his little body.
My son reacted very well (he was 3 months old at that time). The second time she even massaged him while I was BF him, as he was a bit grumpy.
I liked it also because she asks a lot of good questions.
On the other side, I've also had an appointment with the homeopath, and he give him some drops during a week.
The two together was just the perfect solution for my baby.

I hope you can also find your perfect solution !

Hi,
My baby had reflux too. She was on a medication called Zantac that really hlped. She used to spit up pretty frequently. Sometimes even after about 2 or 3 hours after the feed. I was advised by a lor of people to switch to formula , but i stuck my guns and kept her on breast milk all along.

We used a reflux pillow that is avaible in the U.s but they wont ship it to hongkong I found out. SO i had one made specaially for my baby . Its like a cheese wedge. My baby is now 8 months old and does not suffer from reflux anymore.

The pillow costed me hk$ 800 but I can sell it to you for hkd 500 if you like. My baby hardly used the pillow as her reflux and spitting up had improved a lot so its brand new with a washable cover. U can have a look at the pillow on the web - just google AR PILLOW .

I used to carry my baby upright after each feed for at least one hour and that really helped. I wish I had gotten this pillow from the start . Anyways happy to answer any more questions you may have coz I have tried many other things to stop the spitting up !

Regards, Binny

same problem, our paed put him on Zantac, which helped a lot. he's still on the med at 5 mths now. she also gave us WindDrops, which could help them burp better. but check with your paed to see if these would be good.

Hi Binny and kellyst,

At what age did you start giving them Zantac? And for how long? I wasn't so hot on giving her medication this early but now I am quite concerned about her reflux....I can see her struggling with spit up in her throat and I think it is throwing off her eating. I guess I better head to the pediatrician...

Binny, thanks for the offer of the pillow. let me see how this week goes and I will let you know. I have a modified pillow here that kind of works but then I find she also spits up even when vertical. BTW, I notice you live in Tung Chung...do you ever attend the LLL tea breaks there? I am in Mui Wo and may go to the next TC one.

not the greatest website ever, but has some good basic information. Also, try talking to Matty, I recall her mentioning that her little one had this problem, maybe she can give you some tips. Also, is she vomiting or just spitting up? is she gaining weight appropriately? (is it projectile - like it forms an arc when it comes out? did it dramatically increase in severity recently? is the vomit curdled or sour smelling? - if so it's probably a good idea to talk to the ped/health visitor, etc. to rule out something more)

best of luck!

Thanks Rebekah for the site. BTW, when are you due? It must be soon??

Her reflux seems to have just gotten worse in the last 2 days. Half the time it tends to be just spitting up the most recent feed and half the time it is curdled so more like vomit. No projectile though. I wasn't too concerned and could manage it by propping her up but in the last day or so it seems to be causing her more discomfort and making her fussy alot. She also doesn't seem to be as anxious to eat. Breaking my heart to see her uncomfortable.

I got the impression that my baby's spitting was related to what I ate. Dairy and fruits where the main trouble makers.
And with fruits I don't only mean oranges and lemons, even apple was to acid. Rosehiptea also had terrible consequences.
If it's reflux I think this won't help you and I must say that my pead did not believe in it. But for us it worked.
It's worth a try but you need to be patient. It took a week after cutting off dairy to get better.
One day they will stop spitting, so there is hope for all of us! All the best!
