speech problem

Hello Freinds...

I m new to this form...i was just searching about speech problem and got this form...
My son he is 25 months old....he is only 1 child in home....he is having speech problem....he is not saying any words...before he used to say mama but now no more...he can sing ABCs and 1 to 10...also he can say few worlds...like i see u...yah...no....but whatever i want to teach him he dont listen to me...otherwise he is very active....he can follow our instructions...like sit down, lie down come here...dont do...etc....he is very active in playing the games....also he understand the nursery songs...he like to watch the cartons...but i m worried alot for him...wy he is not speaking...why he cant follow my words...if i want to teach him something why he doesnt listen to us.....i feel like crying....i m lots of worried for him...pls. help me...pls. let me know how should i solve my problem...any good speech centers in tst???

Do you take him to the MCHC? I would take him there for an assessment and they may recommend speech therapy or something like that. Things like that are available through the public system for only $60 a session. My daughter hasn't been for speech yet- but she goes for physio and occupational therapy and they have been really good with her.
 
Speech Therapy

Hey my son is seeing a speech therapist but she's in Central.
My son was diagnosed as ASD at the age of 4, he didn't talk much before, just single words, now he improved.

Hi, my son did not have many words at 2 years old. Just "more". By 2.5 he had a few more words but not many. The first thing we were recommended to do is have his hearing checked as this is one of the most common reasons for delayed speech. I'd suggest you do that first and try not to worry too much. It seems quite common that boys are slower than girls at speech. We did end up seeing a speech therapist. Integrate in Central and I would recommend them (Carol Adcock is the speech therapist there). They are not cheap but did an initial assessment and gave us some good tips and games to try and encourage speech. Our son went to about 10 sessions from age 2.5 to 2.75 years and now, at 3 years old, has improved a lot. He has so many more words now. Loves learning phrases from his favourite books. I know it can be worrying, I was worried too but would recommend a hearing test first and then a speech assessment. Don't listen to labels from any non-experts.

would agree with starbucks2 - one thing i would ask you is whether or not your son understands when he is spoken to / can follow instructions AND are there signs of improvement (no matter how slow)..if your answer is yes to all the above, then there is not so much to worry about.

the reason i say this is that my daughter at 2.5 yrs now 1) understands when spoken to 2) follows instructions 3) and is starting in increase her vocab (5-10 / week) and has no underlying issues with hearing, learning etc. she's been seeing a specialist every half year since 16mths...in fact i brought her to see another specialist just yesterday and the things that i am doing are right on track - schooling wise, activity wise, etc. PM me if you'd like me to share more...but i don't want to bore people with details here. anyhow, hope all goes well - believe me, mothers instincts are the best - don't be too bothered about what other people say...one caring friend told me that my daughter needed 3-4 hours of individual speech lessons every day so she would start talking (the specialist confirmed that my daughter was in fact "talking" but it was babbling = but babbling is equivalent to talking - just that no one knows what she's saying)...

Lesliefu - I am having the same issue - my 3 yr old son is delayed in speech also but I wonder whether there is any way to help him to catch up to his age level in speech. Friends also recommended 1 to 1 speech training for several hours a day as they say once a week ST is not enough.

I am not sure whether this is the right way or not but am worried that he falls further behind if I dont do something right way to help.

she can do an assessment at your home as the environment is less foreign and your daughter will be more comfortable in that environment. she is very helpful in giving you guidelines as to what to do to help.

for me - as I am a SAHM, I have plenty of time to work one on one with my 2.5yr old daughter on a daily basis. in fact, there is much more you can do at home than a ST can do because the environment is more natural. here's what I do....

1) I make sure her comprehension of nouns / verbs is sound - when I read books with her, I might quiz her "where's the dog / bread / house? etc" - one of the recommendations for Dr Lee was to make sure her comprehension was good so that she could adapt to school life in the long run

2) I will be making a scrap book documenting all the daily routines my daughter does (pictures might include her wearing shoes / putting on her back pack to go to school / eating breakfast / playing the I Pad) and use that as a tool to converse with her on a daily basis. giving her the language - "Andrea's eating breakfast - what is she eating? Oh - she's eating bread" etc.

3) I am teaching her different gestures / sign language to get her message across, because she does not have the vocab to express herself, in order to minimize her negative behavior (such as hitting to get a message across) she might be able to wave her arms to say no instead...simple things, but doing it consistently will help

4) when her temper is bad - then you calm her down and tell her the "process" of what she is feeling e.g. oh the chair fell down on your foot so you are sad. it's OK, you're a brave girl - let's play with your dollies....something like to that to give her the words to express herself and not having to hit or cry all the time.

I have been recommended by numerous concerned friends that I need to see ST for my daughter. As a response I have seen 3 ST and done 2 formal and 1 informal assessments. Like I said before, as long as your daughter understands what you say to her and follows instructions that is a good thing - academically you will have to accept that your daughter might have to repeat a year of kindergarten - but to be very honest, does it really matter as long as the level is appropriate and your daughter feels comfortable and happy learning? To me, I really don't care what others think, just want whats best for my daughter.

Do you have her in any classes (not playgroups) so she gets more language input in context? The specialist I saw a couple days ago is very confident that once my daughter attends daily school, her language will drastically improve since the input will be so much more. She insisted "babbling = talking" you just have to give her the words! Also, are you speaking 2 languages at home? We are - well, family speaks Cantonese and helpers speak English, so these kids will be a little confused initially - nothing to worry about though.
