I first brought my son to see a speech therapist at age 2. He was estimated to be 9 months behind, not saying a whole lot at all. Since that time he has been making progress just with a later starting point and so far he hasn't caught up but he did make a lot of progress. I had him assessed again at age 4 and his receptive language is normal for his age (not great, but within normal limits). His expressive language is around 12 months behind (could be 6-12 months, somewhere in that range). Other than that, there are no concerns. He's very visual, good with number, puzzles, can read some words, knows all his letters, normal fine / gross motor skills, very normal development except for expressive speech. The speech therapist has no doubt he'll catch up. He's a twin, a boy and the 3rd child plus my husband didn't talk until he was 3 either, so it's not too surprising. He's a calm, sensitive boy, likes to talk but his vocab is fairly limited and his sentence structure isn't great. However, he uses certain words that are very normal for his age, his grammar is not great, but fairly normal for a child his age. He's been accepted to ESF P1, and the school is looking whether he qualifies for speech therapy, in the meantime I continue to work with him and I am sure at some point, he'll catch up. There is no reason to believe he won't, everyone says.
