smoke smelt through vents

in my office, 2 doors down, the little room is used as a smoking room. i noticed the smell of smoking, which must be coming through the vents of the building. is this going to be bad for me? or is it just the smell and not the actual tobacco drifting (ie which would be 2nd hand smoke)?

would anyone know?

I'm no expert but I would think if you can smell it, then you are getting second hand smoke.

I think if it is smoke, it's probably very diluted. Stressing about it may be worse for you and the baby than ignoring it. It might also not be any smoke at all, the smell of tobacco lingers often lingers after the smoke clears.

To the best of my knowledge, second hand smoke is not healthy for anyone. I?m assuming that you?re pregnant (given this posting is in the pregnancy forum). I did a quick search on pregnancy and secondhand smoke on the Internet and there were numerous articles on this topic, none in which were favorable of second hand smoke exposure to a fetus. I?ve attached just a couple of the links I found. I?d encourage you to do a quick Internet search and come to your own opinion on this issue.

Maybe you could switch offices with someone until your baby is born?

I had the same trouble at work when I was pregnant - someone smoking in an office three doors down from me. The smoke would be circulated throughout the airconditioning system, into my office. I couldn't actually see the smoke, but could certainly smell it. Not only was I worried about the effects on my unborn child, but the smell made me feel very queasy.

I respectfully requested that the offender (a partner in my firm) stop smoking in the office and he refused. Knowing I'd receive no support higher up the line, I didn't take it further. I moved out of my office, into a spare workstation over the other side of the office. It still makes me mad.

I hope that HK bans smoking in workplaces SOON.
 
thanks everyone! yes i find it quite surprising that they still allow smoking rooms! I can't move office as we'v got the whole trading room sitting together but i have made a complaint to the CEO and they are looking into it. i hope that it will be more smoke free in hk! a lot of other cities are doing that!
