Hi does anyone know where I can buy a sling for carrying my new born baby? i have the baby Bjorn (which is too big for new born) and another sling but they are not for new born. I need something that can carry the baby close to the body.

Thanks!

And I would like to point out that a Mayawrap is fantastic. We use it all the time and our LO is now 21 MO and about 13 KG. Have used it since birth.

I like the Moms in Mind slings from Singapore. They have a sturdy plastic ring, which is much easier at airports than the metal variety. They also have a great range of fabrics.

Having said that, I used the Baby Bjorn from birth to about 6 months. My babies and I loved the Bjorn.

Be very careful with ring slings - newborns or otherwise. There appear to be no safety standards on these often homemade products. It is actually quite easy for your baby to fall out of them. I have heard stories (don't know how true) of babies suffering injuries from falling out of ring slings in the UK.

For new babies I like the Bjorn because they just seem more sturdy. You can bend down and pick something up without feeling like the baby will drop out. I didn't use my ring sling until my bubs were sitting.

Having said that, everyone has different preferences !

The only cases of problems with slings that I?ve heard of are homemade slings where the rings are too thin. This is actually warned about on the Mayawrap web site at http://www.mayawrap.com/n_sewsling.php

As a distributor of the Mayawrap slings I know that they are extremely cautious. At the end of last year there was an incident with a sling ring that was investigated and we were asked to stop selling the slings during the enquiry. In the end all the slings passed and we were allowed to sell them again.

I believe that the Mayawrap slings are safe ? and I personally loved using them from six days old (while we were actually still in the hospital) to the last time when my daughter was three and a half years old.

Best wishes,
SARAH

I like the Moby found at
http://www.theslingstation.com/
because then you are using both shoulders and it is very versatile and conducive for both newborns and breastfeeding. This site also carries the Maya wraps and the Ellaroo Mei Tai carrier (for older babies). They only ship to the US so you will need someone to forward your order. They have a great selection.

good luck!

Thanks. tikkunolam, is Moby wrap hot? It looks secured but am wonder if it will be too hot for HK weather.

I haven't worn it in summer yet but actually it seems a lot cooler than the other contraptions on the market. I've heard from friends (not in HK) that they weren't hot at all. The cotton one I have is quite soft and breathable. I bought it on recommendation from friends who found that the Maya sling was putting too much weight on one shoulder. I prefer wearing back packs than messenger bags for that very reason- I don't like carrying weight on only one shoulder. My best friend was really disappointed in both the Baby Bjorn and the Maya slings for many reasons including its lack of versatility. The instruction booklet that came with my Moby wrap have many options for baby wearing from infancy through toddler. I just found that you can order them and have them shipped to Hong Kong through http://www.doubibou.com/carrier/babycarrier.html
but the wraps are a different brand than the Moby. They also carry the Mei Tais which I've also been eyeing.

Good luck!

I have used a mayawrap for two of my three children. In my top 5 list of things you must have with a baby, my mayawrap sling is number one.

My daughter was 11kg at 12 months and at no point did I find her too heavy for the sling. She was being carried in the sling until I was too pregnant with her brother to fit her leg over the bump, not that she was too heavy (I was about 8 months pregnant).

I have found the versatility of the Mayawrap just amazing from the different methods of carry, to the ability to strap your toddler to a restaurant chair should they not have a baby seat.

The reason I got a Mayawarp in the first place was I watched a lady pop her baby in a sling, latch the baby on to feed, pick up her two shopping bags and get off the bus. I thought I have got to have one of those.

My son is still using the wrap and I just love the fact that he can see everything I can see and we chat constantly when we're out. He is now 20 months and his language skills are really taking off. I haven't needed to put him in a push chair because he is too heavy and so we are able to maintain a wonderful connection when we go out.

I don't have a back that is particularly stronger than anyone else, in fact I have had to call an ambulance out before now because I put my back out and couldn't move-I've never had a problem with the Mayawrap sling.

Sling style carriers like the Mayawrap have been used for thousands of years. The Mayawrap is based on slings used in South America. Women from Africa to Indonesia have used sling style carriers made out of pieces of fabric for generations. Personally I feel that this makes this style of sling a tried and tested one. The purpose of the rings is just to make the sling more easily adjustable.

Finally I know there is some research out there, on the internet, that has suggested carriers in the style of the Baby Bjorn, with the small area of material supporting the entire weight of the baby, may cause spinal compression.

Just a few of my thoughts.

Slings/ carriers for bad backs

Hi there

Just to complicate matters..

I am expecting my first child in June and have a chronic back problem, which I am sure will get worse carrying the baby around. Can any of you suggest which sling/ carrier will work for me? I'd prefer not to have too much weight on my shoulders... any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks

Harsha
